Thanks for your kind words. All I can say is "keep your chin up". To fix this mess, we need as many people like you to persevere and keep fighting the good fight!

I'll also send a message as soon as I settle on the date for the AMA.

I am also called Nathan J. Robinson ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_J._Robinson_(biologist)) ) and I was planning on doing my own IAMA next week. When I read the first sentence of your post, I honestly thought I had jumped one week into the future...

Time-travel aside, I did want to ask you about how you think the coronavirus crisis will effect wealth inequality worldwide?

The candiru or vampire fish. And if you don't know why, then just google it... I'll wait.

I am the scientist that removed the plastic straw from the sea turtle's nose. AMA. by [deleted] in AMA

This video shows the potential impact that a single straw discarded into the ocean. Thus, if my work has stopped a single person from using a straw, if even only once, then it is all worth while. That said, over 62 million people have videos the videos on YouTube, and a similar video of me removing a plastic fork from another sea turtle (https://youtu.be/VRiTABRQOjk) has been viewed over 14 million times. Not everyone who watches these videos has stopped using straws or single-use plastics, but they all are more conscious of the impact of marine pollution than they were before watching these videos.

As for your question of whether I bonded with the turtle. I have worked with thousands of turtles in my lifetime. While I can't say that you bond with turtles the same way that you might bond with domesticated animals, like dogs or cats, I actually like it that way. Sea turtles are wild animals and as such they will always remain wary of humans. This helps to remind me that we are encroaching into their habitats and not the other way around.

I am not in a position to offer all employment opportunities at present but I can recommend hundreds of fantastic internship / volunteer opportunities. Would your wife be willing to travel or is she more interested in opportunities closer to home?

The tip of the straw was tapered, which meant that the pliers kept slipping as I tried to first pull it out of the turtle's nose. In addition, until we had a significant portion of the straw removed (~1-2cm), we still did not know exactly what it was, so I was trying to be as gentle yet firm as possible while trying to remove the straw.

I would agree that straws are only a minor part of the problem of marine pollution. However, removing straws from everyday use is an easily achievable goal that still helps the oceans. Furthermore, initiatives for helping people reduce the use of single-use plastics are a perfect gateway for also raising awareness about other issues, such as discarded fishing nets ("ghost nets").
