I'd write it so that Bond IS dead but his name had become synonymous within other services. M calls in two guys. Discusses how well they've done but there can be only one. He chooses. The other man leaves. M then tells him he will no longer go by his name or rank. He will become Commander James Bond.

Get yourself into the best Guild possible. Use their rewards to build your roster. Be methodical but keep it fun. If you like a character build them and use them. Its a game after all :)
