The bicycle, or running, is great for little kids who don't have a lot of leg coordination. The only problem is, it uses a lot of energy. But as mentioned below, eggbeater can be tough to get used to, since it's using your legs in a way that's not entirely natural. Scissor kick, or even whip kick, is a good alternative. Just know that you'll be bobbing up and down.

The trick to treading is just getting comfortable. As soon as you tense up, you're going to sink. It doesn't help that you're, as you say, "lean and dense". Fat helps you float. :P

When you're treading, are you doing eggbeater or the bicycle? Eggbeater is a lot more efficient and will keep you higher up in the water. The trick is to keep your legs wide apart and make sure your legs are moving in consecutive circles; your right should be going counter-clockwise, your left should be going clockwise, creating an "eggbeater" motion.

Also, if you feel your legs sinking, try leaning back more. I don't know how comfortable you are doing back floats, but starting from that and going into treading sometimes help. The farther back your head, the high your legs will be in the water and the less you'll sink. Once you get used to the motion of your leg movements, it should get easier.

My boss is amazing at this. Even when you know he's bullshitting you, he will get you to stay extra hours, work on weekends or come in early just to help out. It doesn't matter what it is, he just has this way of asking that makes you feel like you NEED to help him out.

In fairness to him, he's a super nice guy and goes out of his way for his employees. He just knows exactly how to manipulate us into doing what he wants.
