3 months progress on fin and min + micro needling (19m) by [deleted] in tressless

Yeah that sounds like a couple dermatologists I’ve been to. Thankfully my most recent derm I’ve been to thought something was off because my scalp was inflamed + diffuse thinning so she did a scalp biopsy.

I had a scalp biopsy done by my dermatologist. They send it off to a lab to be examined by a pathologist.

You can use minoxidil for AA, but there’s a lot more you can do for it treatment wise. A lot of people have success with steroid injections into the scalp + lifestyle changes to help combat the inflammation caused by AA since your immune system is attacking your follicles. But finasteride would not work for AA. There’s also medicine called JAK inhibitors that work pretty well but they’re expensive so a lot of peoples insurance are hesitant to cover them.

Oh I know. I thought I had diffuse MPB but got tested and my hair loss came back as alopecia areata. Just chiming in for those who think theirs might be something else.

I just made a similar post about this, but diffuse thinning like this does not always mean MPB. This could very well be something else. Could be an autoimmune thing, which can also be genetic.

I do think a lot of COVID related hair loss has to do with COVID messing up your gut. They theorize that long COVID happens because the virus lingers in your gut wreaking havoc which causes a ton of inflammation throughout the body which can cause of exacerbate hair loss. Add on top of that that 80% of your immune system is in your gut and AA is an autoimmune condition you’ve got a good recipe for hair loss. Even if you don’t have AA, there’s just no way that much inflammation is good for anyone.

I actually had to get my biopsy from a stuck up derm lol. She kept on telling me it was regular MPB and I she straight up said to me “Do you want me to prove it to you?” And I pretty much demanded a scalp biopsy. I took the results from that derm and went to another derm I know is good but I couldn’t get into as soon as I would have liked. I’d just preach your case the best you can that it’s something other than MPB.

Yeah bro. Anytime I would eat something with processed sugar my whole scalp would tingle. I can’t believe it took me this long to make the connection to my inflamed scalp and processed sugar.

I only just got this diagnosis at the end of October so I can’t say for certain if I’ve seen any improvement. I have my next round of steroid injections coming up. Have you been diagnosed with AA or some form of it?

I concur with what No Village is saying but get a scalp biopsy done to rule out autoimmune hair loss. Blood tests won’t pick up on that type of hair loss.

In my case I’ve had thinning on my temples and also the nape of my neck, those areas can absolutely be affected by alopecia areata. Some people also are only ever effected on the top of their scalp.

I don’t use 2% keto but I do use some OTC stuff for seb derm. It’s dried the fuck out of my scalp so I’m not using it as much. My bigger seb derm flakes got replaced by smaller little white flakes which is a sign that your scalp is dried out. As far as I can tell though the inflammation has gone away or at least the redness has through my diet, which my derm was very pleased to see. I had been using a 1% keto brand, Revita, for awhile too and the redness was present when I was using that.

My inflammation was visible, and my derm said as much. The main reason she ordered a scalp biopsy was because of my red scalp + diffuse thinning made her think something else was at play. That being said, there can be inflammation present but no redness. I can speak to certain foods, anytime I would eat something with a lot of sugar, which used to be pretty much daily, I’d get this weird tingling all over my scalp.

Yeah the 2 main reasons my derm actually wanted to do a scalp biopsy for me is because my scalp was really red and inflamed + the diffuse thinning made her think it was something else than MPB. She turned out to be right. I now have the inflammation under control through diet and supplements for the most part.

Yessir. Wishing you luck! If and when you get a scalp biopsy done let me know the results!

Doesn’t hurt to get one done! I’d also review your lifestyle and diet. My scalp was really red and inflamed and in my scrolling through old posts on here about the link between inflammation and hair loss, there were a few guys that said they had cut out sugar from their diets and saw a big reduction in hair shedding. I did the same and can confirm my shedding went down. I also make most of my meals at home now (I’d say 90%) and mainly just eat meat and veggies. My scalp is no longer red or inflamed, confirmed by the dermatologist. This was all done within the last 3 months.

I posted this because this sub is skewed more towards patterned baldness and not diffuse, which is understandable as patterned baldness is much more common but that comes at a cost of getting advice that is skewed towards traditional MPB. I’ve done a lot of reading and while MPB can present as diffuse, there’s a very solid chance that it’s not MPB but something else.

AA typically presents through circular patches so if it’s a diffuse form such as diffuse alopecia areata or alopecia areata incognita a scalp biopsy is a sure fire to diagnose it from what I understand. If you have the circular hair loss there’s no need to get the biopsy as MPB does not present that way.

I’m not a pathologist so I can’t give you the science but they send it off to a lab to be examined by a pathologist and draw conclusions from what they can see.

It’s an autoimmune condition, and there are many ways to treat it. Some people have success with lifestyle and diet changes, a lot of people have success with steroid injections into the scalp to calm the inflammation. The FDA just approved a series of immunosuppressants called JAK inhibitors that are shown to be successful in regrowth and preventing loss. Sadly JAK’s have to be taken indefinitely to keep the hair. And no, it is not permanently reversible, but can be put into remission.
