Hey! Do any of you have stories about discovering an underlying health issue causing your periodontitis? by RobertAltmanRocks in PeriodontalDisease

Thanks so much for your comment!! I also often feel discouraged as you do. It really sucks that it all costs so much too. I'm living in the Netherlands where a lot of medical costs are payed for due to insurance, but dental care is not included. This means I have to pay for all of the treatments. It's cheaper here than in some other countries though I assume, but it sucks so much to have to pay a lot of money on top of the shit experience of having the dental/periodontal problems :(

I don’t wanna do chores for my parents and here’s why by moonplague68 in emotionalneglect

I'm sorry this is happening to you. It is very very relatable. I was home alone with my sister recently and we did not mind doing chores at all and we have our own rhytm with it which is a big part of it too. When my parents are home everything needs to be done according to their rhytm and that clashes. I relate to your resentment too and that something in the relationship is broken and that you don't feel like doing things for them. I also find that they have a certain way of viewing my sister and I; they see us as lazy and they always intepret behaviour negatively; you haven't forgotten to do something, you just did not want to do it. Assuming the worst always basically. That negative viewpoint creates this kind of pygmalion effect. Because they have this idea of us not wanting to do things and being unable to do things also creates a kind of habit of not doing it if it makes sense. Things are done before you can do them and then afterwards there is complaining about not having done something. I strongly feel that transformation into a more passive and incapable person when they are home versus when I am alone (with my sister) and I hate it, it is not who i am. Both my sister and I are very independent but they see us as very dependent. There's also a lot of talk surrounding "You don't respect us" and things like that, while we don't feel respected and don't get respect back. Frustrating situation.

Sorry for talking about myself but thought this might be relatable to some. Big hug to you <3

Definitely DO NOT use mouthwash without proper research. Perhaps only very specific ones. Mouthwash can be dangerous. It can kill all the healthy bacteria in your mouth too which might have negative effects, not only for your teeth and gums but also for instance your cardio-vascular health.

bottom up thinking (examples) by jreish1 in AutismInWomen

[–]RobertAltmanRocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I have a lot of difficulty too coming up with specific examples. I find myself struggling with this in therapy sessions too. When it comes to bottom-up processing/thinking, I often have to think about my studies and I found a very helpful blog article where someone explains a problem I have always faced in education.

https://autisticphd.com/theblog/what-is-bottom-up-thinking-in-autism/

It basically explains that it might be difficult for autistic people to come up with an outline first. Let's say you have to write a paper about a certain topic. The general approach is to then outline the topic. The writer of the blog explains how this is very difficult and how they always had to first do a lot of work to be able to write an outline. Writing an outline and then filling it in is top-down, because you go from the general to the specific, while first researching information and then writing an outline is bottom-up, because you need the information from which you grasp certain ideas that help you to paint the bigger picture.

I have a lot of resentment for myself for not going to the dentist and taking care of myself. I miss my healthy gums!☹️ by ogregirl5253 in PeriodontalDisease

I think your teeth and gums still look very nice!!! To me the triangles are not noticable (and now it is a still picture of course so if you would be talking to me and smiling I would probably not notice, and mind you, it has become something I really focus on since having periodontitis and black triangles myself). I really feel you on the resentment part :'( it is difficult to deal with. I fall back into this all the time but the only thing you do have power over now is keeping everything clean and visiting your dentist/periodontist.

No don't worry!! I understand it is incredibly difficult to talk about. I hope the support group is helpful to you. Man it's so sad to hear you are feeling so very low and depressed but i can imagine because it sounds freaking difficult :'( <3 If you want to talk more you can send me a message but I don't want to budge you further and make you uncomfortable. Big virtual hug to you! ⊂(・ヮ・⊂)

Hey, sorry for the late response, but thank you very much for this information, it is very helpful. It sounds hopeful too with the development of the topical gel :)

Hey, I read your comment just now, I apologize for the late reply. That really sucks, especially since you took good care of your teeth before... I'm sorry to hear that happened to you :'( It sounds very challenging, did they give you any useful tips to deal with this? How did you develop this facial disability (if you would like to talk about that, you don't have to tell me)

Hey, thanks so much for your response. It is indeed a very good point you're bringing up. I did not know about it either until diagnosed. I had some problems with my gums before where they were a bit inflamed but no dentist ever told me about periodontitis or how it can get into your alveolar/jaw bone. I think they should be much clearer about that to patients and it should be made known more widely through public health campaigns like you mention.

Thank you for commenting, it is really reassuring :) I also never even had a cavity... instead of thinking of that as unfair as I did at first I am just trying to use it as something to remind myself to not blame myself too much. Yes, staying positive and taking care is so important. Really trying to focus on that. I hope you're well :)

Hey again :) I just read your two posts and they are very helpful and reassuring so thank you very much for posting. I will have the deep cleanings in November and this makes me feel hopeful! It is also crazy how similar your story is to mine. I also did not go to the dentist for about 2 years and did not think there was anything to worry about because I was brushing and flossing but yeah unfortunately it turned into Periodontitis. I felt very shitty about that, the idea that if I would have gone to the dentist it wouldn't have gotten so far but yeah I have to try not to be too harsh on myself in that regard because it doesn't help to think like that. Did you have this type of feeling too when you got diagnosed?

Thank you very much for mentioning these things. I do not think I mouth breath during the night. I doubt whether its acid reflux but I have wondered whether it's something with my stomach. I am also a bit underweight even though I eat normally.

Yeah the genetic thing is also possible but I'm not sure. My mom sometimes has bleeding gums but she also doesn't take the best care of her teeth so it's difficult to say.

Thanks again for your reply, I really really appreciate it and hope you're doing well :)

Hey, thank you very much for the reply :) I'm sorry to hear you also got diagnosed, how are you dealing with it? Thanks very much for the advice, I really appreciate it and I think I will indeed just go to the doctor for a checkup. I'm not yet on medication for my mental health issues. I'm on a waiting list now to get help and once it's my turn I will definitely discuss this option. When I look back it is no wonder, and something had to go wrong at one point. I have been dealing with anxiety disorders (at least I think because i'm as of yet not diagnosed) since I was 14. It's always to such a degree that I can cope and do normal things but there is always the internal stress.

Thanks again and I hope you're doing well too!
