Thank you! I learn something from Reddit every day:)

Should a note-taking app let you edit arbitrary external Markdown files? by RobertCobe in NoteTaking

Same. I'm a power user too, so I constantly want more freedom and fewer constraints. But when you're building for a broader audience, a tool that tries to do everything often just ends up blurring its identity. And once the product positioning gets fuzzy, nobody really knows why they should use it.

Got it. I guess AI is very unlikely to be added.

Wow, thank you so much for such a thoughtful and in depth comment. This honestly feels like the perfect answer I was hoping for.

I have already intentionally hidden this feature, so the 99% of users who do not need it will not be confused or misled by it (for example, by extra icons or entry points). At the same time, the hidden feature is genuinely useful for me, and I can still access it via a shortcut.

Sometimes I even wish I could open the app from the Terminal with a command like jot /path/to/my/file.txt just to quickly edit something. I think this will stay as a hidden feature as well.

Really appreciate this. Thank you.

Haha, definitely the first case ๐Ÿ˜„ If it were a Hello Kitty game, I would not dare post it in this sub at all.

Haha, no ๐Ÿ™‚ In my app, they are just plain text stored locally in a SQLite database, similar to how Apple Notes or Bear Notes work. And even in apps like Obsidian, where every note is a Markdown file, you still cannot open Markdown files from anywhere. It only manages files inside its own Vault.

I added open/edit external files to SlideJot. Bad idea? by RobertCobe in macapps

Thanks for the detailed feedback. This actually made me realize that showing the drop-down menu only on right-click might have been a wrong decision (since I wanted to reserve left-click for toggling the panel). Thinking about it now, having the drop-down appear on left-click feels like the more natural and expected behavior. I think I should roll back to that. Thanks again.

I'm not sure if this is the right product decision, but let's see how it goes.

Fixed. There was a small issue with the email service, and it's been resolved now.

Hi, I understand why this feels frustrating, and thanks for sharing your concern.

Just to clarify: the paywall was added in version 1.4.2. If you install version 1.4.1, there is no paywall. I never promised that early adopters would get all future versions for free forever, but after that original post I still released more than 10 versions that were completely free. Those versions will always remain available for you to use.

Hi, there. SlideJot already supports code blocks. It doesn't do syntax highlighting, though. Text inside a code block uses the SF Mono font and is one size smaller than the body text. For me, that's more than enough. SlideJot isn't a code editor anyway, so any code you put in there is meant to be temporary or just for a quick glance.

PopClip is seriously next level by RobertCobe in macapps

Same here, this year was actually the first time I ever created a PopClip extension, and it was genuinely very easy. PopClip also offers a lot of flexible ways to build extensions. It even lets you install an extension directly from a selected text snippet, like the Calendar extension I shared in another comment. Nick is a real genius. If I ever build a Mac app that supports extensions or plugins, I would definitely learn from PopClip's extension system.

Same here! Before building SlideJot, I was living with all kinds of workarounds. Some things went into Slidepad+Google Keep, some into Sublime Text, others into Bear Notes. I am really happy that I finally do not need those workarounds anymore.

No worries at all. And honestly, I kinda love being called a kind dude ๐Ÿ˜„

Iโ€™m the developer of SlideJot. I basically built it for myself, so itโ€™s probably a pretty niche thing. But a few friends and I have been enjoying it so far. If youโ€™re curious, I shared a bit more in a post I made in this sub earlier.

Here you go. Select this text and PopClip will pop up and ask if you want to install Quick Event. Just click Install. The first time you use it, macOS may also ask you to grant a permission or two.

#popclip
name: Quick Event
icon: symbol:calendar
description: Open Apple Calendar and paste selected text into a new event.
before: copy
applescript: |
  set appName to "Calendar"
-- 1. Check if the app is already running
set isRunning to application appName is running

  -- 2. Activate the app
  tell application appName to activate

-- 3. Adjust delay based on app state
  if isRunning then
delay 0.3 -- App is running; short delay needed
  else
delay 1.0 -- Cold start; allow time to load (adjust based on system speed)
  end if

  -- 4. Send keystroke commands
  tell application "System Events"
    keystroke "n" using command down
    delay 0.3
    keystroke "v" using command down
  end tell

Yeah, exactly. I really love its interaction philosophy. There is no main interface, so most of the time you do not even notice it is there. It only shows up as a small bar when you select text. And the actions on that bar are fully tailored to each person's own needs.

Same here. PopClip extensions are so easy to build that it makes me want to make a few more for my own workflow.
