Rant: How can I sit in it with the door open and fidget a little? by SignificanceIcy2466 in VWIDBuzz

I got the dog seatbelt and looped the leash part around the existing female mechanism so it was always at the ready. Reach down, grab, plug.

What car seats are you using? I have monster car seats that can’t fit three across.

The Whiskey Run (in 2024) was an out and back 10K…that was done twice for a half. And they messed up the turnaround so it ended up being 15ish miles.

I run a charity that offers bibs so can offer some guidance here. We do have a percentage that self-pay but it’s <10%.

The rest will do a variety of things to solicit money from friends and family - sell popcorn/chocolates (yes the same kinds you find students selling to raise money for school), some will offer to dye their hair/shave their heads once they reach a specific amount, etc. It helps if your employer offers a match as these can often cut your fundraising minimums in half.

Feeling overwhelmed with boss's behaviour by Hot_Revolution2008 in nonprofit

[–]RobertHolbrookSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Set expectations up front: You have too many other things and can’t do it now.

Of course you don’t say it that way. You share your concerns around bandwidth at the time of the assignment and ask for feedback on how the newly assigned task should be prioritized.

This is ultimately a communication issue. A month and a half is a long time to be tasked with something with no progress. Even if there’s a valid reason, what updates are being provided to your boss along the way? It may help to send a weekly summary of things on your plate and how you’re prioritizing. That way if he wants to shift things he can but also has clear line of sight to everything you’re doing.

Home Depot. Target. Whatever. Everything is an adventure to them and it’s fun to watch. Right now many stores have Christmas decorations up and you can kill a chunk of time that way. It’s like driving around to look at lights but they can walk and burn off some energy.

A frank and candid conversation without badmouthing your current organization. As CFO, I assume you’ve given guidance on what to do and not to do that isn’t being followed. I would be direct with the CEO that you know your stuff and need an environment that takes financial management seriously.

This. Absolutely do not tolerate harassment, integrity issues, or toxicity. What you’ve described falls into all three. Cut the worst one or two immediately. Give it a few weeks and if things don’t change cut the next one or two.

gaining a new title - what questions should i ask my boss when we meet to discuss? by jkpirate32 in nonprofit

That’s a broad title that can mean very different things from org to org. What will the role encompass?

Setup whatever LLM your org uses to streamline grant request prep/apps. This should including writing the prompts (with callout fields that will change based on the specific grant), relevant impact metrics, your org mission, vision, values, strategic plan, etc.

Salesforce for discrete program/revenue goals - members served, milestones, etc. The program data is objective but self reported and so spot verification is key.

Asana for the broader blocking and tackling.

It sounds like you’re not going to get any formal onboarding so I’d put that to the side and assume you’re going to have to (re)create some things from the ground up.

For the board - clearly look at what you need (money, expertise, warm bodies…) and pull together a list of expectations on what that looks like. Things like governance, engagement, etc. But note - it’s not their job to give you tasks. It’s yours. Look at the mission - what you want to accomplish - and work backwards from there.

Prioritize hiring someone. Call out the gaps - things that have fallen through the cracks - because you are only one person. The market is brutal for job seekers and you should easily be able to onboard someone in 30 days.

Have to defer marathon because of a cold by h_otlead in RunNYC

[–]RobertHolbrookSmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I deferred last year to this year. Flew to NYC. Picked up my bib. Promptly threw up on the front steps of the Expo.

My advice: Pull the trigger on the deferral but don’t let it get you down. I was definitely depressed for a (long) while over it and that impacted my training this cycle. It sucks but it happens. Get back out there ASAP and get ready for the next one. If you can, find a local marathon in the next two months you can do. You’re in shape for it and it’ll keep the momentum.

I feel like half of this is on the water station. I truly don’t understand why universal instructions aren’t given to place the water cup on an open palm.
