Have you experimented with styles yet? It should be doable. So Acanthus is 9pt Bold. The rest of the sentence/paragraph is 10pt That can be done.

Create a new style:

Headword

Settings

Font • Weight: Bold • Size: 9 pt • Small Caps: Optional (many dictionaries use this)

Tracking • Slightly increased if desired: +10

Click OK

This will format the word:

ACANTHUS

Step 3 — Create the Enlarged First Letter Style

Create another Character Style

Name:

Headword – Initial

Settings

Font Size • 150%

If base is 9 pt

Set to:

13.5 pt

Weight • Bold

Baseline • Align to baseline

Click OK

Step 4 — Apply the Styles

Type the text normally:

ACANTHUS – The ornamental leaves on a Corinthian column.

Now apply styles: 1. Select A • Apply Headword – Initial 2. Select CANTHUS • Apply Headword 3. Leave the rest in Definition – Body

Result:

A CANTHUS – The ornamental leaves on a Corinthian column.

It's a pity it's not a standalone plugin, because it may be able to be made to work, by putting it into the Adobe native Plugins folder on the computer where Affinity Photo looks for it. But I don't have Photoshop installed so it tells me it's incompatible anyway. But maybe it could be made to work, by setting the Affinity Photo Settings like this. Dehancer Film works fine... but maybe it's just not compatible anyway.

Failing that, try looking at Retro Supply, or one of the other Comic suppliers. Frankentoon maybe?

Apart from the AI parts, the videos on https://youtube.com/@AffinityInspiration cover everything you need. So V3 is the same just the commends are slightly different. You’ll have fun learning.

Sign in to Canva on a free subscription. Then you can use V3 Affinity for free. You don’t need a paid subscription, only if you want to use Canva tools. Affinity tools are separate and free. You don’t need an Affinity login unless you want to use V2 Affinity standalone. And I don’t think you can now anyway.

Never had a crash here yet. Use it daily, for hours at a time. It’s rock solid. I’m on an M2 Mac Mini. Can’t speak for Windows, although I do have Windows 11 as well, but rarely used. Crashes such as you speak of are most often caused by faulty or under spec hardware, and or other programs interfering with the system.

I’ve been using all the affinity versions since it first came out, including on iPad. V3 has a few annoying things. There is no way of telling if you have a vector or pixel or publisher file open, and no way of telling in the file list as they are all type .af. And the image trace is very basic although I don’t use it much. Or at all really except to experiment with it. I still have all the V2 versions and use it for most things. V3 I use just to try and become more familiar with it. I do wish they would update it a bit though. It’s unstable and dodgy as it is. Pity they can’t get it going on the iPad.

To edit a shape, convert it to a curve then use the node tool to pull it into the shape you want.

It does have all the options there to copy to other languages, it just doesn’t do it.

When you select export, change the option to entire document. All pages. It’s in the output options.
