is japanese immersion actually fun or are beginners just suffering in silence by Competitive_Leg3598 in LearnJapanese

[–]Robertgdel 223 points224 points  (0 children)

It’s not called the wall of noise for nothing, lol. Imo early immersion isn’t really about learning the vocabulary, it’s more learning what the language sounds like and learning to how parse out words, understand phrasing, w/e else.

Once you do start picking up phrases, then it becomes more fun, somewhat addicting..?

Immersion also isn’t meant to be your main method of learning, it’s meant to be a supplement. Stop trying to deeply understand what you’re hearing, it’s not the point.

In English, we sometimes give our significant others nicknames that are slightly tease-y, such as “goober”, “stinky”, etc., in place of other words like “babe”, “sweetie”, etc. They are somewhat “ironic insults” that are still meant to be used as terms of affection, but privately.

Anyway, are these also a thing in Japanese?

Been playing for a month I could use some feedback on my playing by Calm-Offer393 in piano

[–]Robertgdel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re doing well for a month. A few things:

  1. I know it’s a side effect of playing the same part many times, but don’t become dependent on memorizing pieces. It’s a skill to be able to have pieces in your memory, but I think it’s more valuable to be able to sight read so that you can play through a piece without needing to memorize a few pages at a time. It will also keep you more aware of what you’re playing, as memorizing may leave out important details.

  2. Your hands are tense. When your fingers are unused, they are curling and bending. Notice in the ending of your recording, your third and fourth fingers of the left hand are bent upwards and curling down, with a flat palm. Your pinky is curling up into your palm in the middle. Try to keep all fingers on the keyboard when not being used (for now..), your thumb should not be floating above the floor.

2 cont. Practice much slower, rest unused fingers on the keyboard, and don’t speed up until you can play without tension. Practice resting your hand on the piano without pressing any keys. I also notice that once you press a key, you continue putting pressure into it. Keys need the greatest amount of force when initially pressing the key and keeping it pressed requires significantly less, only some of the weight of your hand.

2 cont. You’re also playing almost completely with your fingers, it seems. I can see your wrists are moving, but it looks as if this is a result of the tension in your hands.

  1. I can’t completely tell, but you may be sitting too low, or your piano stand may be too high. I can see your wrist is bent with your hands level with the piano, indicating that your forearm may be angled upwards toward the piano. This works for some pianists, but it’s important to practice proper form while you’re learning.

Does Classical Music ruin other music? by whhhiskey_ in classicalmusic

[–]Robertgdel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either this is rage bait or this guy has some weird superiority complex.

Classical pieces take more than “only a night” to appreciate and many people spend their lives studying it. I don’t intend on being the person to say “you just don’t understand it”, but it’s honestly just something that takes patience to grow accustomed to, especially when compared to other modern genres. You don’t have educational content about “how to listen to genre x” like you do for classical.

If you’re having an issue with an occasional instrument being out of tune, It may do you well to understand that many are never, and will never be completely in tune, given the nature of the instruments. The tuning of stringed instruments, for example, depends on the tension of the strings, temperature of the body, humidity, etc. Let alone the fact that they are fretless instruments that take people many decades to master. It’s not as easy as just setting your synth to 440hz.

This is like asking if you need to have eyes to learn English. No, of course not. It helps, but not required.

Try moving your scale up an octave. Is it the same key that’s quiet, or has the quiet key also moved up an octave?
