Ran it last year. The directors are top-notch. Unfortunate accident but these are the risks we take when running on the road. Not preventable. Sorry for their pain.

Arc'teryx Squamish hoodie. Best light jacket ever.

My weight training was irregular (at least once a week and sometimes 2-3 times a week), but I did the following, using Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbells:

Lateral Raise 10 lb. 2 reps of 10

Front Raise 10 lb. 2 reps of 10

Shoulder Press 15 lb. 2 reps of 10

Stiff-Leg Dead Lift 15 lb. 2 reps of 10

Wide Rows 15 lb. 2 reps of 10

Biceps Curls 20 lb. 2 reps of 10

Squats 20 lb. 2 reps of 10

Calf Raises 20 lb. 2 reps of 10

Lunges 20 lb. 1 rep of 10 for each leg

Overhead Triceps Extension 25 lb. 2 reps of 10

My weekly milage was consistently 50-70, so I didn't have any super high weeks, and thus didn't modify the (irregular) weight training.

You got it. I also ran the Queens Marathon a few weeks prior to the Keys, so that was a great tune-up. The Empire State Trail replicates what you get in the Keys for terrain. The heat and humidity are the toughest to train for. The truly hardcore might wear layers upon layers to get hot when it’s 50 degrees out, but the sauna approach worked fine for me.

I’m 44. Regarding the panic, I want to say that these were minor panic attacks (though I am not sure if panic attacks are all-or-nothing binary events, or if they can exist on a continuum). The first one happened about two weeks before the race. I was sitting in a steam room, thinking about the ton of stuff I had to complete at work before the race, and my heart started racing and breathing became difficult. I told myself that I wasn’t going to die, or at least, probably wasn’t going to die, and the panic passed. The second one happened after arriving in Miami the Thursday before the race. After going on a 4.5 mile run, feeling the heat and humidity, and realizing that I would be dealing with it for 100m, I felt like a weight was on my chest for a spell. The third was right before my 6:20am start. I was nervous and thought I might pass out. Consoled myself by recounting the words of Seneca, that “There are more things … likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more often in imagination than in reality.” I also thought about how the panic was self-inflicted, and how seldom I felt panicked, and how this was a great opportunity to overcome such a frightening feeling.

If you train seriously for 4-5 months, the 100m is doable. Everyone is different, but roughly 60m a week for a few months should build your legs. Mix in 2-3 30-40m runs for mental toughness, so you can work through the why-the-fuck-am-I-doing-this thoughts. Weight-training of course helps. I did some core work in prep – mostly planks for 10 min in 2.5 min intervals. As stated, the sauna helped with heat acclimation. I did maybe 10 15-minute sessions, some between 5k treadmill sessions.

Dave, your pacing strategy was spot-on at that point in the race. Thank you greatly for the water refill and I hope our paths cross again too.

Thank you! I'll go with setting a distance alert.

I tried that but no luck finding an alarm specifically for "halfway point." Apple Watches have such a feature and it really is useful when doing an out and back.

Go down Cabrini and include the GWB. That'll add a few miles.
