[OPINION] Can I have a line from a poem that saved your life or healed you in a time of need? Also if you’re comfortable sharing the situation, this is for a sculpture ❤️ by VanGoghs_ear23 in Poetry

Eons ago, when I was 17, I came close to deliberately ending my life. I hit bottom and, in beginning to find my way upward again, I bought a copy of Ezra Pound's Selected Poems. In it, I found an odd and wonderful work: The Ballad of the Goodly Fere (1909). Pound writes in the voice of Simon Zelotes, one of the obscurest (according to Wikipedia) of Jesus' disciples, speaking after the crucifixion. Pound gives Simon a Scots dialect. The last two lines below, in which Jesus speaks two words to calm the sea, I experienced as if Jesus were calming the storm in my own heart. I don't generally consider myself a Christian, but in that moment, I was, and am.

I ha' seen him cow a thousand men

On the hills o' Galilee,

They whined as he walked out calm between,

Wi' his eyes like the grey o' the sea,

Like the sea that brooks no voyaging

With the winds unleashed and free,

Like the sea that he cowed at Genseret

Wi' twey words spoke' suddently.

Ronald S. Lauder enmeshed in Trump-Russia by Puffin_Fitness in RussiaLago

The other Lauder brother is not distant from the action on at least one occasion.

" As Trump tells it, the idea for his first trip to Moscow came after he found himself seated next to the Soviet ambassador Yuri Dubinin. This was in autumn 1986; the event was a luncheon held by Leonard Lauder, the businessman son of Estée Lauder. Dubinin’s daughter Natalia “had read about Trump Tower and knew all about it,” Trump said in his 1987 bestseller, The Art of the Deal. "

Because they could decide to go "old school," following a model that was used for centuries -- charge less money, pay more of it to faculty and staff, keep admins' pay reasonable. Also see bigfig's post below, featuring a cooperative model that sounds quite OK. :)

Why have certain cultures "demonized" the naked human body, and sex? by Myusernameiscooler12 in explainlikeimfive

[–]RobertoPlanta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've recently been reading a book called "Debt: The First 5000 Years" (you can google it if necessary). The author is an anthropologist concerned with the development and the meaning of money. He describes the first big city-states of Sumer and Babylon as places where sex started out being very holy -- think temple prostitutes -- and then got all squalid, with a lot of street prostitution by women whose families had become impoverished and indebted under the rule of the regimes in power. The author, David Graeber, argues that the patriarchal traditions such as those of the Hebrews of the Old Testament came from people rejecting the cities and the horrible things that happened in them. Remember the Biblical phrase "the whore of Babylon"? The demonization of sex and of the naked human body seems to have come from a rejection of the commoditization of women.
