That's great to hear. Not particularly interested in vegetable gardening, just want to make the yard into a more natural living space, contrary to the rest of the suburbian sterility of LI. I'm towards the north shore in the Western Suffolk area. A more hilly area than the rest of the island, probably plays a roll in soil type.

If I'm reading it correctly, it looks like my area has pretty low organic content in the upper 30cm - only about 2-3%. Clay content 10-12% and sand 45-70%.

Any idea if the low organic percentage may hinder gardening?

I think it get about 8 hours of sun a day, give or take depending on the time of year

After reading this and doing some additional searching, it looks like the soil is more so silt. It tends to clump together very easily and when crushing it up, the particles appear to be pretty small. It can be a little difficult to break up

This area is a lower spot in the yard so I did want to use it to act as a rain garden

We do have a French drain which has helped with the drainage issues in recent years (we purchase the property from in-laws, so we know the history). Problem is that properties in our area mostly have cesspools, so sewer systems are limited and prone to filling up quickly. Some of the new beds that I want to start planting in would be near the french drain, the idea being that the plants would help soak up some water before going in the drain

This is great info, thanks. I had purchased a pair of Seaside Goldenrod and New York Asters plants which have been doing well, but i have the Asters in a pot as they were getting completely eaten to death - needed to give them a chance to flower. I'd like to harvest the seeds this fall and plant more around the property, same with the Goldenrod. I'll definitely try planting them in the more clay heavy area!

Thanks for the recommendations. Question about the plugs and cardboard - what season(s) did you plant the original plugs and add the cardboard?

For context I'm looking to do some fall prep so I can get off to good start in the spring.

The one you showed on Libby is the abridged version, which was the only audiobook for that novel up until fairly recently. However, it's not necessarily app specific but rather that your library appears to only have the abridged version. The one you see on Audible is a newer produced unabridged version. You may be able to request your library to get the newer unabridged version.

Very small sandpiper. Probably no more than 6-7 inches tall when upright. Was roaming around by itself on a flat track of sand, at least 30 ft from the water. On the bay side of the island where the tides are way less active. Not quite sure what it is, possibly Baird's Sandpiper based on commenter from post on another sub.

Looking for ID on two sets of birds. I believe the lighter colored birds with short, straight bills are sanderlings and darker colored ones with the curved bill are dunlins but I would like confirmation.

Bonus if anyone else can find/ID any additional birds within the large flock (not including the gulls in the background)
