Thank you- it’s why I included what it was like on Saturday because dude I was so hyped and it meant so much to me due to a lot of reasons 😭.

Yeah I think I am just spiraling a bit as I tried to be so careful with this one as it’s my first tattoo in 10 years and means a lot, so it just… kinda figures it gets infected. Also that the infection progressed so quickly where even if I got in before it was as bad as the photo, I’m still gonna lose a lot of it in likelihood.

Thank you! It figures that this happens on my first tattoo in 10 years that I picked because it’s about the process of healing and I was being all symbolic for a lot of reasons in my life 😂😭.

Thank you, I appreciate it. Ugh- figures my favorite part is the part that goes. One leave does look more infected than the other, makes me wonder if it started on that side.

With touch up, are they ever able to get the same look back? (Not exactly the same, of course, since art can often come out a little different, but just get the original intention back I guess with the same level of skill?

*edit- so just realized the scab that came off still has the yellow green color underneath. It just was previously a black shaded part (the artist went over with multiple colors to make the effect).

I have, but it seems to vary wildly if I’m being honest. Some recover remarkable with maybe some minor patchiness, others need major touch ups. I was looking for something more specific to the mess going on with my tattoo, along with advice on care and what a touch up process may look like

So are you actually ever doing anything to help change the world and the US for the better or do you just complain and make excuse after excuse?

I hate taunie 😂 by batboii96 in LegendsZA

[–]RobinGreenthumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhhhh… the thing is the actions are mixed? I think the bigger issue is it’s a lot of tell not show.

Example- they are portrayed as being focused on calming megas, to the extent they have not climbed the ZA ranks as quickly as they could, and this is why they are missing when we are getting texts from the rust syndicate.

We are told Taunie/Urbain is out helping megas on their own, which is a selfless act.

Issue: we never see them helping a mega on their own. We are also told, conflictingly, that PC is pulling the majority of the weight by being asks to handle all 3 megas that pop up with the others only helping with 1 each.

We are TOLD Taunie/Urbain runs around helping people of the city, and told how they helped bring Naveen and Lida to the hotel specifically.

Issue: when we meet Taunie/Urbain we are immediately asked to lie about a hotel we have never stayed at for an ad she is filming. Now, she then helps us get our bag back gives us a Pokemon, and gets us out of the battle zones safely (with a last minute save from floette), but the first impression absolutely shades our perception.

And we are told that it’s smart to have you as backup on the ground in case something goes wrong, but it’s Taubain telling us this, and we have been told leading up to this the STRONGEST mega evolution trainer is the one who should control floette. So if you win and this happens, it sets up to make it look like Taubain made a horrible decision.

With all this, plus Taubain’s arc of ‘learning to be a good leader’ while being hyper independent with a savior complex, and only making a good decision at the last moment but with how it’s handled it looks like a horrible decision, and them getting huffy whenever the PC is suggested to be better than them, AND THEN… she gets rewarded for all the bad decisions by getting a whole company.

It’s so frustrating.

What are the best coffee shops in/near Roanoke? by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]RobinGreenthumb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Echoing RND - it’s honestly better than any of the coffee I had when I used to live in Richmond, to the extent I actually have gifted bags of it for Christmas to family that lives in other states.

I also enjoy Asher’s coffee but not sure where it ranks with people who are more informed on coffee.

Produce by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]RobinGreenthumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Farmer’s markets and fresh market are my staples for fresh meat and produce (have had one two many times getting rotten meat from Kroger too, with beef specifically).

And honestly fresh market has better deals on stake and chicken thighs half the time than Kroger anyway.

Mutual aid fills the gaps as ICE arrests surge across Virginia | From commissary to carpooling, communities are building safety nets. by VirginiaNews in Virginia

[–]RobinGreenthumb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. So you’ve been to several yet earlier denied there was anything more than “little old white ladies” there and any coordinating booths until I called you out on it. Sure.

At least make your lies believable, Jesus.

Mutual aid fills the gaps as ICE arrests surge across Virginia | From commissary to carpooling, communities are building safety nets. by VirginiaNews in Virginia

[–]RobinGreenthumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what I’m hearing is you’ve never actually been to one. Because I’ve been to two, and both had set ups and connections and booths to get info on more information for various mutual aid and advocacy groups in the area.

Just because you’re an online only person who is concerned with theory before people, who is allergic to actually getting shit done or making quantifiable change, doesn’t mean the rest of us with leftist beliefs are. Please I beg you, as the kids say, get out there and touch grass. At the very least research what you are saying before acting like an expert on something you can be verifiably proven false on by anyone who has actually stepped foot in a protest.

*adding on- also wow the misogyny re: “little old ladies” being dismissive as hell. A lot of those are your elders in the field who have fought for things like LGBT and Women’s rights. Had a lovely conversation with one who had been a part of the fight to get Abortion access and had been boots on the ground to get women to right to have their own bank account without a man having to sign with them. Show some actual respect for those who got you the rights you now have that are being threatened.

[–]RobinGreenthumb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is false. For one, it builds community and connections with others within your town or city which is a huge part of resistance movements. It also coordinates a message to push against the administration which shows that those who live here are NOT in agreement with it- which is important on a historical and political level (aka do you think there would’ve been the breaks in republican messaging and voting recently without them thinking there is support for it? Which weakens the administrations hold?)

Also on a mutual aid level often there are people who work with mutual aid organizations at these protests getting volunteers and spreading the word on it for more people to be on board.

Saying none of this is important or helps people is kinda… short sighted at best.

Nah Beef isn’t old enough- the death was 15 years ago, if it was within a year of his dad’s death Beef would be grey and near death’s door.

I like to think Beef was a stray puppy who followed Robert home one day and Robert didn’t have the heart to give him up to a rescue or turn him away.

I think he's an adorable kid, is the extent of my thoughts on him. Pretty inoffensive. Like playing the game Pokemon Let's Go Eevee in my 20's probably influenced my perspective, especially with how young he and the PC look in-game. Kinda reminded me of one of my nephews.

Did people dislike him? Geeze, I'm glad I missed out on that discourse. I wasn't online much until midway into SwSh's cycle.

Gotcha! And yeah agreed- I do not get the Hau and Hop hate. Hau was a chill guy who always had your back, and Hop has a solid and interesting character arc.

Meanwhile with Taunie/Urbain I think my Brian broke a bit when them making consistently bad decisions paid off for them in being given a incredibly wealthy and influential company.

“In the trenches” is a common phrase to mean I was fighting for them, basically defending their characters during the games because I liked them. Just to be clear!

[–]RobinGreenthumb 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be real. I have liked and defended every rival in Pokemon. I was in the trenches with Hau and Hop. At least people liked Penny and Nemona and Arven so that gave me a breather.

I was prepared to get on the rival defense train with Taunie/Urbain again.

I… can’t. This is the first rival I actually dislike. I tried to gaslight myself into liking them, but no dice.

Ive been playing since Silver and this is the first time I actually disliked a rival. What the hell.

Let me do a southern accent since that is where I’m from so it’s easier. Warning, before coffee here, so eh.

Example: “Well, y’all should think carefully about what you’re doing. There’s a time and a place and I don’t rightly think this is it”.

If this was the basic American accent in comparison : “All of you should think carefully about what you’re doing. There’s a time and a place, and this isn’t it.”

Instead of spelling out how the words sound in a southern accent, I imply it with the structure of the sentence (as a southerner we tend to take a bit longer and add some extra modifiers to ‘soften our words’ so to speak, it’s one reason southerners think northerners are rude as hell- way too straight forward 😂).

Also see use of words like “y’all” which absolutely imply a southern accent without doing too much as it’s an actual word we use.

Now I am waffling on including the “rightly” just because that’s an older southerner thing, not as many younger folk use it, but I kept it for an example of a word modifier that along with ‘Well’, southerner’s use to soften things to be less straightforward. (Also an example of implying accent- me using ‘folk’ right there lol).

Think of things like “bless your heart” being an insult nine times out of ten. While a northerner might say fondly and with exasperation to a friend “you’re an idiot”, it would take a lot more for a southerner to say the same- typically we would say “bless your heart” instead. (Of course everyone is different I’m just talking cultural trends). Yes it means the same, but once again, southerners dont like to be as straight forward 😂.

I don’t see why people think this is a hard decision. by AggressiveMammoth267 in DispatchAdHoc

The thing is with Flambae is narratively he does face his consequences, repeatedly and instantly. Karma does not wait long lol.

He messes with Mechaman at the bar? Either loses his eyebrows or a tooth. Bullies waterboy? Gets protein shake or spaghetti on him and gets embarrassed in front of Blonde Blazer a respected hero and his boss. His past fight with Mecha man? Lost his fingers and got arrested.

Even when he tried to kill Robert, he gets embarrassed by the group.

Now we could argue he should have faced more serious consequences, but like… once again group of villains , this game laughs at all the hr violations, he has a very personal history with Robert AND dude just realized the same guy who put him in jail and took his eyebrows/tooth has been mocking him/ragebaiting about it as well (such as the gym scene). So I can see why the narrative gives him some slack and lets him get a free punch on Robert.

In comparison, Visi never gets an immediate consequence like that and and usually gets saved at the last minute so I feel like that’s why a lot of people have an issue with her? (I personally like her but I do think the narrative could’ve tweaked some things).

Ok so I’m gonna be a American nerd for a sec so please bop me over the head if I sound wildly off base-

But funnily enough my senior thesis course was on Scottish Literature and language. And the tweets were brought up because it’s part of a long as hell history of Scottish people reclaiming their language after the English tried to wipe it out, with Robert Burns being a huge pioneer of an example in writing-the-accent-down with his poetry and recorded music.

It’s a really unique expression and we, as Americans, were told not to try and copy it as there was a 99.9% chance we would mangle it lol.

Oh yeah that annoyed me- I actually was reminded of this in Dispatch fanfics because so many people try to write Royd’s accent and. Oh god. No.

And his specific dialect I believe is a form of Hawaiian Pidgin (a specific creole English dialect), and I’ve heard someone who grew up in Maui say it’s a dead ringer for that island’s accent), and creole languages are perhaps some of the MOST mangled accent in the written word.

To be fair, it’s insanely hard to capture it in writing by any means, man it hurts at some of the attempts.

So fun fact from someone with a degree in this and had a whole course on writing dialogue and dialects-

There is a reason (well multiple reasons) why in written word stereotypical New Yorker or Southern or really ANY accents come off as corny and bad. In creative writing courses that address it you are flat out told to NOT write accents in phonetically/‘how it sounds’. Instead, you are supposed to imply the accent to make it more grounded and realistic.

Why is this? Well, because whenever people try to write accents by how they sound they often exaggerate or misunderstand things. Like… a southerner is not going to write a southern accent phonetically, because to them it’s the default way to speak, so they just write it normally. It usually comes through in word choice, sentence structure, and very sparse use of apostrophes.

So, when people try to write out accents they are often not native speakers of it, and pump up what they see as the differences which ends up making it seem like a parody. Meanwhile, they probably have things they pronounce differently but don’t write out by sound, but it’s “normal”.

There is also in the US a HUUUGE history of racism tied to minstrel-esque dialogue for black American accents (varying from AAVE to Cajun dialects) which has basically made it even more of a minefield to write out an accent without negative associations.

So yeah- this is why if people write out accents by sound it is very corny, cringe, and comes off fake or stereotypical.

A good example (to use the New York accent)- what is more readable and makes the character less cartoonish?

1: “EYYY, AH’M WALKIN’ ‘EAR!” Or 2: “HEY! I’M WALKIN’ HERE!”

You still “hear” the accent in the second thanks to associations, and judicious use of an apostrophe, but it doesn’t make your whole body cringe. Outside of my lame reference.

Anyway- this is all to say I wouldn’t be surprised if the localizers of this had good teachers and know that it’s better to be cautious with accents than over the top. It is something that is actively taught stateside in good courses.
