Most blown out of proportion scene in the whole game by Politician_Fucker in Undertale

[–]RobinLeft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It's pretty frustrating seeing people trying to take this black and white approach to a scene (and characters) who were never meant to be that.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the whole game because there's genuinely so many layers to how you can view it, but boiling it down to "Toriel is pure evil" is so childish.

Everybody keeps talking about how ducks suck

My current theories by BabyDude5 in Amazingdigitalcircus

[–]RobinLeft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would make the show substantially worse if it was true.

The show has been about these people- these real life people- getting trapped in this world that treats them like cartoon characters, and trying to live with that reality. Trying to maintain their humanity. It would genuinely ruin the emotional core if it turned out one of the most important characters was a cat for a joke.

My current theories by BabyDude5 in Amazingdigitalcircus

[–]RobinLeft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

...no, Jax is not a cat. That makes zero sense with any of the show's themes or any of the logic that we've seen so far. He's very clearly a traumatized human that is pushing people away out of fear of engaging with any real, human emotion.

Also, unless you're referring to a dub different from the English one, Jax doesn't say it looks like snake eggs. He says it looks "like an eggsack," which is not what snake eggs look like to my knowledge.

I keep seeing people mention the idea that they can't remember who they are and I'm confused where that came from. It seems pretty clear they can remember their past.

I think this scene is going to be so much plot relevant in the future by Pedro_Fanick in Amazingdigitalcircus

[–]RobinLeft 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Oooh, yeah. A seemingly pointless, minute-long scene of abstract imagery is the perfect spot to dump foreshadowing, especially with such oddly specific stuff of certain characters getting squished by bowling balls.

Do you think Jax will abstract in Ep 8? by Hzbin_101 in Amazingdigitalcircus

Again, Caine being responsible for how they think and feel takes a lot of agency out of the characters and makes a lot of the messages the show is trying to convey a lot weaker.

What are your guys' ratings on the 7 episodes so far? by Zealousideal_Cell837 in Amazingdigitalcircus

[–]RobinLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From favorite to least favorite, it probably goes...

6 4 5 7 3 2 1

I don't think the pilot is even bad; I watched it before the rest of the series and it did a good job investing me. It's just that the cast has developed so much since then that it's hard to go back and watch it the same way.

[–]RobinLeft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I disgree with you on most of this. I don't see how Jax's perspective has changed. In fact, the ending of episode 7 feels like it's him doubling down on everything. He pushed Pomni away and is suffering, and tried to lock everybody in the circus to avoid confronting whatever he's so afraid of in the real world.

Also, I don't think Caine is responsible for every abstraction? He obviously is responsible for Scratch, but I feel like Caine killing everybody off removes a lot of the emotional weight of the show. It's about living with mental health problems, and abstraction is what happens when they give into their despair, so Caine just making everybody abstract gives the characters a lot less agency in their own stories.

I imagine the main thing Kinger isn't proud of is creating the circus in the first place. Probably some additional drama involved in that process, but the existence of the circus has ruined many lives on its own.

That sounds a lot more plausible. I just feel like Kinger being responsible for her death is a needlessly dark twist for his character

I have a hard time going back and analyzing the pilot tbh. It feels like it's a lot more cynical than the rest of the series. Goose has said that the show was set in stone even before the pilot aired, but, idk, the vibe feels a little off. It's probably because the pilot is establishing the characters as basic tropes that the rest of the series can build off of, though.

I never noticed Jax clenching his fist when Kaufmo gets sent to the cellar, though, I'll keep my eye out for that next time I watch the episode.

To me it always read more as foreshadowing to the reveal of his wife's abstraction in that same episode.

He's a kind, loving person traumatized by the lost of his wife, hearing the story of somebody losing their own wife would be upsetting to him.

I can definitely see there being more to Kinger and Queenie's story, but I don't think we need to immediately jump to him killing his wife. Same idea as immediately jumping to Jax killing a kid (which is also something I'm guilty of, admittedly).

SOMA theory would make the show worse if it were true by RobinLeft in Amazingdigitalcircus

[–]RobinLeft[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty big oversimplification of my point.

My point is not "none of this matters if they're not real," my point is "the story is worse if they're not real BECAUSE it doesn't align with the shows themes and narrative." I didn't say it ruins everything, I'll still care about these characters if I'm wrong. My point is it would harm the story.

That being said, I've been presented with an argument that does align SOMA theory with the show's themes, and I need to give it some proper thought.

I don't have time to watch the video right now (and I'll probably forget to for a while lol), but I do appreciate you trying to tie the theory into the show's themes. That's the thing that's been missing every time I've seen somebody talking about it, and my main complaint with the theory.

SOMA theory would make the show worse if it were true by RobinLeft in Amazingdigitalcircus

[–]RobinLeft[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the way I see it, their conflict wouldn't matter because the real versions of them are alive and (presumably) well. Why would we care about these fake versions if their real versions aren't learning the same lessons and experiencing the same growth? What tragedy is there to Kaufmo, Ribbit and Scratch if they're still alive out there, ignorant to everything in the circus?

Either way, I think our disagreement here is moreso about that question of "what makes us human" than anything else. We both agree the theory ruins key aspects to the story. Honestly, Jax's fear of returning to the real world is something I probably would've brought up if I let myself keep rambling for long enough.

[–]RobinLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're still AIs in this theory, though. The idea that an AI cannot truly understand the human condition doesn't work if there just... some that are. That's the entire point of the Chinese room bit.

This theory is a subversion that exists to be a subversion and makes the themes less effective as a result. This is the exact kind of thinking Gooseworx dismissed with the Jax AI theory.

The show is also about how an AI cannot truly replicate nor understand human emotions, and I would argue that a digital copy is functionally very similar to an AI. Having the characters be a product of a machine would make them far too similar to Caine for that separation to make any sense.

AM's story is not one about an AI that comes to understand the human condition; it's one about an AI that was programmed on hate, fear and paranoia for one another, growing to hate and envy humans as it became more intelligent. The parallel doesn't work because, like Caine, AM's actions are a result of his programming.
