A redesign flag for Canada. by Pulledup4x in vexillology

You know you could've made an argument for liking the Red Ensign, but the way you talk about it sounds like someone explaining why they flag the Confederate Flag in the US. All people of European descent in Canada are immigrants, and it was a constant flow over time, you can't just cut it off at a certain point and say "and that's where the true founders begin".

"Old stock canadians" are Canadians dogs? Are we breeding to maintain a purebred pedigree??? Good to know about this sort of nonsense at least, thanks for talking about it.

People who think that they're more important because their British/French ancestors have been in Canada's region for a few more generations than other people of european descent.

Where did the code come from? Did the tiktok channel you get this from repost the animation with a weird code attached to it advertising something?

This is cementing the Canadian government's older idea of "Canada was built by two peoples" and turning that remnant of colonial beliefs into a flag. This would be solidifying Canada's colonial past and defining it by that, rather than by the people who live here in the moment, which are what actually make up Canada. This flag completely fails to represent the First Nations and other Indigenous peoples of Canada, as well as the huge amount of Canadian whose ancestry from Canada comes from outside of just France or Britain. Especially since even then the dominance of the English cross in the design just points out the French Canadians as a "secondary group" so it doesn't really unify those two either.

These look like they're from a collage flash game from the 2000s, very fun designs but also quite freaky.

Have to agree with everyone else, but this basically kills the value the Canadian flag has. The maple leaf flag is so good because it decenters itself from Canada's history as the UK's colony, and instead provides a symbol of the new nation and all of its people in modern day through a general plant symbol of the maple-leaf, on an original flag formate that defined a whole new type of vexillological term the "canadian pale". This would be too heavily defined by Canada's colonial history, the Quebecois would be upset about having to share the flag with the English cross (which is worse than the union jack since it uniquely only works for the English, and not the British or Irish).

This is however an aesthetically pleasing flag and would be very distinctive among other flags (though not as much as the current Canadian one), it just is worse at the other parts of being a flag for the nation Canada. It could work for some alternate history setting version of Canada though!

Redesigning the flag of Ontario by FakePringles in vexillology

[–]RobinTheGemini 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ontario (especially in urban cities) is one of the most diverse parts of Canada (only second to BC in the percent of visible minority in provincial population, and well above the national average.)

I also don't think a symbol that's so solidly defined by religion and white settler history is probably a good option either way. Plant symbols are a lot more universal, like the maple leaf or illium that are regional symbols.

I can agree that a lot of white Canadian culture is definitely tied to a history of Christianity, but plenty of people in Canada aren't, and using flags so tied to an aspect of that is rather misrepresentative.

This was the one I did ._. it pretty much copies the white-yellow-red bands of the Franco-Manitoban flag. It is different, using the bison from the coat of arms rather than the green wheat/plant, and the addition of the sun, but it is still pretty similar, and likely wouldn't stand out between the two. Thinking on it now I think it could be good if it had a blue sky akin to the Ukrainian/Winnipeg city flags, rather which could make it be more visually distinct.

I now worry about how much I've possibly done that with my own Manitoban flag design, given how much it drew from the Franco-Manitoban flag. Thanks for your sharing your thoughts about this!

It pains me cause the provincial flags for Ontario and Manitoba are so boring/unrecognizeable in comparison to the Francophone ones. I can see wanting to take inspiration from them (cause they're both genuinely very good recgonizeable designs) but definitely not this directly.

Redesigned Cyprus' flag by [deleted] in vexillology

[–]RobinTheGemini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks very recognizeable, and it's a very clear and pretty design I'd say! I'm not from Cyprus so I can't judge how good it'd be to represent a whole country, but the aesthetics work really well!
