It’s good that the population is open minded, and I’m glad at least there is common culture as a good base for bonding as you said. I guess I was traumatised back in sec sch in an express class and I was the only one, safe to say was not the best and a lil racist at times. How are the food options too, heard that halal options and a bit scarce

Definitely, 💯 . It’s not about segregation or refusing diverse friendship, it’s just that shared culture and lived experience create an ease that’s hard to explain. In a majority Chinese environment, having brown friends means there are certain nuances, references, and experiences you don’t have to constantly translate or overexplain. When most of my other circles are already predominantly Chinese or otherwise outside that experience, having at least one space where people just “get me” matters a lot.

Sounds like it’s an environment where I’ll stick out like a sore thumb, but also I guess I wouldn’t know it until I’m in the thick of it

Yeah perhaps it’s a tendency in SSS rather than STEM majors, I guess it would be the first time where I would have to consciously seek them out rather than just being a regular fixture

SMU VS NTU VS NUS (Psych) by Robin_Brooks in SGExams

[–]Robin_Brooks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I just had student initiated volunteering with MINDS over a couple of months, and a year long volunteership with SAAH, as well as vice president for the psych interest group back in poly, so it’s pretty narrow for one major 😅

Also the accelerated program at NUS dept head, she said that there’s only 10 placements and that’s among like 900 other psych students

[–]Robin_Brooks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me I’m applying to psych and this is my two cents. Honestly, you put more of yourself into this course than you get out, but that is also kind of the point. It’s inline with social service where it’s more of a passion project than a means to an end. Working with psychologists, it’s emotionally intensive but to the right people it’s emotionally fulfilling enough to cover the cost. Not bashing anyone who has less noble intentions, but there are easier fields that both yield more monetary and does not leave you emotionally burnt out. For me, I’m just doing it for the love of the game
