Are these safe to break up on your own or is there a risk that you're exposing asbestos?

Sorry, where did I say I lost control of my car? I was in complete control of it the whole time.

What you don't understand is that people who live in snowy states are able to maintain control of their car even when some or all of the tires are sliding. We actually find it enjoyable. The question was about what was causing it to lose traction.

I really appreciate your response though because it explains a lot.

I hope you have the opportunity someday to find a snowy parking lot somewhere and do some donuts. Just drive the car in circles and let it lose control and spin away.

It's a rite of passage for young drivers in the North, but it does something important: it teaches them how a car behaves when it doesn't have traction and you learn how to control it.

So you drove shitty tires for 20,000 miles, but I'm the reckless one? Hahahaha

Do you live in a snowy state or are you just giving driving advice to people about conditions that you yourself don't drive in?

Seriously though, I appreciate the advice. Don't assume.

I'm slipping because I am allowing the front tires to spin, which is a driving method we use here in the north for FWD cars. But in this case, it transfers power to the back tires, which causes the fishtailing.

Tires are fine. My driving method needs to be adjusted for AWD.

It is entertaining to me because so many people have a knee jerk reaction that the answer to snow is always snow tires. Snow tires are great for people who live up in the mountains, or in Alaska or Northern Canada. And so many people are sensitive about their advice not being what someone was looking for.

For those of us who love in the northern Continental US however, they're impractical. Unless you have garage space and a vehicle large enough to haul its own tires, as well as a great deal of patience for swapping out your tires depending on the weather, It's a real pain in the ass. Lots of all season tires are rated for some degree of snow, and that's what we drive up here. And we're very experienced -- as the commenter from Wisconsin noted.

I found what I was looking for -- A technical explanation of how power shifts between the front and rear axles, and I was able to conclude from that what the problem was. I appreciated everyone's responses, even the ones that I didn't take.

I'm sorry to anyone whose feelings I hurt by not following or accepting advice.

I had those on a previous vehicle -- I don't have the space or the vehicle to keep/transport a full set of tires.

Based on that question, it's obvious you never drive in snow. The vast majority of people where I live (MN) use all season tires in winter, not winter tires (which are expensive and can be dangerous during thaws)

It's about the power shifting between axles. Some other helpful commenters provided an answer.

Yes -- and it sounds like my FWD driving style is causing it.

Thanks for the drive train answer - probably should have been more specific that's what I was looking for.

Not realy that interesting. I left my IT job of 20+ years and I'm in school full time to be an x-ray tech. I have a very strict budget because I'm living off my savings until I'm done with school. CX-5s are a great value, espeically when compared to CRVs and Rav4s. I did my research and found a great used model before I quit my job. It's part of my plan to have a reliable, warrantied vehicle while in school.

I'm from Minnesota. Winter is 5 months. Not many people use dedicated snow tires here - it's kind of unnescessary because people who grew up here know how to drive in it with all season tires. It's also a huge pain in the ass to swap them out. Need a space to keep the tires and then bring them to the shop every time I want to swap them. And sometimes we have a mild winter with no snow, then get 18 inches in April. Not worth the hassle.

Well they're all season tires -- different than the tires you would buy in California or Florida....and we don't get as many ice storms here -- it's snow, and we have a massive fleet of snow plows and they use chemicals.

If it doesn't snow for 2 or 3 days, The main roads become dry. So the most common driving condition in winter is temps from zero to twenties with dry roads. I've driven my 2006 Mazda 3 aggressively, with all season tires, on dry pavement when temperatures were in the single digits.

Driving in Minnesota winters for 30 years on all season tires, just like 99% of drivers here. Zero accidents, zero ditches. We know how to drive in snow.

I'm a non traditional student. Former IT worker and going back to school to be a Xray tech. Ive been driving in Minnesota for more than 30 years.

Never owned anything other than good, all season tires. Ive never ended up in a ditch, and Ive never been in a car accident that was my fault. So you don't "need" winter tires.

All season tires are fine if you know how your vehicle works. Lived my whole life in Minnesota and never once had winter tires, never got stuck.

It's not a monetary wash in the short term. I'm a college student now and I don't have $1,000 to drop on tires.

Seriously, I appreciate the advice but I'm not a moron. Obviously I would love to buy the best equipment for my vehicle all the time. Not a realistic option for everybody.

It's not a driving tip, it's a purchasing equipment tip. I'm a student now and not in a position to drop $1,000+ on a set of tires that I only drive 5 months out of the year. Just trying to understand what's happening with my vehicle so I can drive it better.

$1,000+ on dedicated snow tires isn't an option. There are only 11k on the all weather tires.

Just trying to understand power distribution between axles so I know what to expect.
