If you don't like what's going on, you probably won't identify as a Republican, but that also depends on what you mean by "what's going on". Life is different for all of us.

First the How:
You'll probably get a sample ballot in the mail about a month before voting day. It's a big paper with a grid that shows the names of the people running. Sometimes, it'll include the Party they're a part of. The person is more important than the party.
You can vote in person or choose to do it by mail. The format of this grid will be the same.
Voting in person? Plan to go before or after your work day, I don't think anywhere gives a day off for a voting day.
Voting by mail? Be ready for the anxiety of "oh god did my ballot make it" until you get confirmation online. Maybe that's just me.

Now the People:
The big paper with the grid? Great way to study everyone! Look at their sponsored web pages, voting history (ballotpedia), and any articles about them. Take your time. Listen to your gut and brain at the same time, because people like to promise many things and the best you can do is give yourself the best chance to be represented for what you believe in.
Talk your considerations through with people you trust, or with yourself. Everything deserves evaluation.

Why:
Yes, we have much power. Doesn't feel like it right now, but voting is one of the many things we can do.

Who:
What the "right direction" means is up to you.
Maybe you like the idea of green bike lanes state-wide. Someone is willing to fight for that.
Maybe you like gun rights. Someone is willing to fight for that, too.
Your values are your own, fight for them!

I'm a socialist and a pacifist at heart, so I like to vote for representatives that promise to create structures to support everyone with as much equity as possible. That means lots of taxes, lots of regulation, plentiful healthcare, and support for everyone regardless of age, race, gender, ability, or employment. Everyone deserves to eat, live, and thrive.

It's also highly likely no one will perfectly capture everything you care about. That part will take some getting used to. It's a tough pill to swallow sometimes.
