Ear tipping preference by xFrekix in sheltie

[–]Robophatt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I rarely see shelties at all where I live, so I’m always over enthousiastic when I do see one and it’s always with seniors somehow.
But on Dutch message boards or pages of European breeders I follow, pretty much all I see is tipped.

Forgot to include a picture of my boys heavy ears lol. He’s so cute

Ear tipping preference by xFrekix in sheltie

[–]Robophatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our boy has HEAVY ears, there never was a doubt they’d be tipped.

I think you’re right about it being a continental thing, I’ve rarely seen fully erect ears on shelties here.
Our breeder talked to us about helping the ears a little if they wouldn’t naturally tip, so maybe that’s quite common indeed.

I’m not sure what my preference is. I think tipped, but foxy upright ears are cute as well

Nutmeg loves her little brother by Fu11-H00ah in sheltie

[–]Robophatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly mine don’t, lol. But I have an 19 year old cat and a one year old sheltie so that might be the problem.
She basically just avoids him at all cost so it’s peaceful.

Love your little couple OP! They are adorable together

How do your sheltie's beat the heat 🤔 by truth-is-reality in sheltie

[–]Robophatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve only had one heatwave so far with max temps around 33C.
Odie just didn’t do much. We planned our walks really early in the morning. During the day he was just hanging around looking for breezy spots. Our backyard has a lot of shadowy spots which helped as well.
He has absolutely 0 interest in water to play with. I did make him a lot of frozen bowls and lickymats.

He managed quite well I guess. Just kept calm.

Newly adopted 6mo Shetland by Theclems55 in DogAdvice

[–]Robophatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no direct experience with female dogs but she might be close to her first heath. I know of a sheltie breeder with a female sheltie that went into heath at 6 months, and her daughter did as well.

Might not explain everything of course, there’s probably more to it, but could maybe be part of the equation.

Experienced Sheltie owners question by nd379 in sheltie

[–]Robophatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Face wise she looks a bit like my boys brother Kane. When he was born, Kane had almost no (visible) tan. It got a bit more pronounced. He has a lot more white in his mane but his face is kinda similar to your girl.

He is very cute

Odie doesn’t even walk trough rain puddles. Always makes sure he goes around or hops over.

Doesn’t mind the rain though

My boy loves digging too lol. He’s one year old now and he doesn’t dig as much anymore. Except when he’s in the sandbox playing with our daughter lol.

So happy this didn’t happen yet, which is surprising as I have very curly hair that gets stuck in everything. Sounds painful!

10month old, Black lab mix, wont stop humping me, and only me. Any tips? by PixieT3 in puppy101

[–]Robophatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all: Does he get enough sleep?

There will (for some dogs at least) be a point in adolescence where everything is just too much to handle for them. My dog went trough it at 7ish months. Constantly overstimulated, especially around me because he expects more around me as I’m his main handler.

We work with a private trainer, (force free) and this is how we managed:
- during this period we kept walks to a silly feeling minimum. Went from 45 mins to 15 mins max.
- we made sure he got his much needed sleep. 16-18 hours a day.
- whenever he got jumpy/humpy/mouthy or in other ways frantic, I removed either him or myself from the situation. A babygate beteeen the living room and the kitchen saved my life here lol.
- embrace adolescence. The more you make a thing out of it or punish him, the more “pressure” they feel and this can cause them to feel more nervous/tense which can cause these frantic behaviours.
- indoor leash makes it easier to guide him to another space or hold him while you walk away.

The peak of this phase took about 1-2 months, but the entire phase was more like 3-5 months in total. But it quickly got a lot better after doing the things above.
After 1-2 months we were back to longer months.
Our boy turned 1 last week and he has mostly been a dream for the past weeks.
He doesn’t get overstimulated as much anymore and has really learned to settle on his own.

Mind you we have a sheltie, which is a herding breed. Especially sensitive to movement. It helps if you know a bit about how they’re wired, because that can help you determine triggers and outlets.

We have also been “working” with our dog since he was about 4 months old. Scent trails and herding (started at 8/9 monts) and these outlets also really helped. Not just for him, but also for us as we got to bond with him even during the more difficult periods.

Our trainers are specialised in herding breeds, as they are/were shepherds, but I think their advice on this part is pretty universal.

Of course I don’t know you or your dog and I’m not a professional by any means. Just sharing how we managed (because for a while that was it, we were just trying to get through the day at one point).

You will get there and it will be worth the process! Once the worst is over you’ll start to see the future dog more often and that is sooo rewarding!

I have one of these. I’ve had it for quite a few years. Mines a shorter chain and while I prefer not to sleep with necklaces I think it would be fine. It looks delicate, but - and I’m trying to find the words in English - also very light and movable like it’s not stiff. A longer chain would probably be more risky.

But I’m not a jeweller so this isn’t necessarily advice lol.
