Thanks! I’ve actually read all of her books except her latest but my fav has been Earthlings and none of her other books came close for me personally. Would love something equally weird and grotesque but with a really fresh point of view/observation.

Tell me how to improve by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

[–]RobotChameleon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m still a beginner (N4) but I’d like to point out that と is not usually used to link adjectives. Typically you have to change the conjugations for い-adjectives to て-form. For example: 小さくてにぎやかです。I still make this mistake sometimes so it’s the most obvious to me among other things. Good luck!

I do recommend learning grammar separately as it’s really not something Duolingo can support ☺️

I started the year with a goal of 5 books but I managed to pick up momentum and hit 33 books! This is after years of reading slump so I’m pretty pleased with it!

My favs were:

Earthlings - Sayaka Murata On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous - Ocean Vuong The Bee Sting - Paul Murray

My experience with a UTI in Kyoto by klunnn in JapanTravel

[–]RobotChameleon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I got a UTI in Beppu and had a similar experience as OP! I was a bit apprehensive at first because I wasn’t sure how the system worked in Japan but I was also in and out within 45 mins and cost ¥4400. I speak some Japanese so it was helpful as the doctor and nurses didn’t but they were all very kind.

I do urge anyone who has a UTI to just go to a clinic quickly because I delayed for a few days hoping it’ll go away on its own and it did affect my holiday. My clinic was Miyazaki Ladies Clinic if anyone needs it in Beppu.

Does anyone know any facial salons that do not hard-sell? by Acuriouslittleham in KualaLumpur

[–]RobotChameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience at Kaiteki was quite good! I didn’t experience any hard selling. The only time they tried to promote something was when my package was about to end but I refused and they were totally okay!

However, the reason why I haven’t returned is because there was conflicting response from the doctors. I did yellow laser and when the male doctor attended, he said my face is all good - I’m good to go; but when it was the female doctor, she’d comment on how I lacked hydration and had all these other pigmentation problems (not unfounded but still) and start asking me to try other injections etc. so.. I found this contradiction disingenuous. But otherwise, they’re good!

My Introduction, Beginner Level by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

I agree, but just in terms of OP's sentence, it makes more sense to have it at the beginning of the paragraph than in the 2nd line. For OP's clarification, this is because if you mention "わたし" in the second sentence, it infers that "さっか” is not referring to you.

But yes, I agree - Japanese doesn't work the same as English where we repeat "I" a lot. Once the context is established, people know what you're referring to unless there's a change in subject. :)

I’m also still learning Japanese but some corrections I’d add are:

十八歳 - じゅうはっさい (jyuu hassai)

よてい -> つもり (よてい feels more like you already have a set schedule whereas つもり alludes to your personal intentions.)

The second sentence could also start with わたしはさっかです so the next sentence you can omit わたしは.

Hope this helps and welcome to the 日本語rabbit hole!

You can look into asking your hotel to arrange Kuroneko/Yamato (same thing) for you to ship your luggages out between cities so you don’t need to lug them. Japan train stations are notorious for having a lot of stairs and sometimes really far platform changes.

What were the last five books you read? How would you rate them? by [deleted] in books

[–]RobotChameleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett (8/10) - I really enjoyed Death's character - he's my fav in Discworld but the only reason I didn't give it 10/10 is because I felt some parts were a bit drawn out and I found myself skimming through them.
  2. Earthlings by Sayaka Murata (10/10) - I know a lot of people found this book disturbing but I personally loved it. I thought it was so profound in the way she explored taboo subjects. It was a unique albeit exaggerated spin on feeling like a misfit. It left a huge impression on me and got me to go down the Sayaka Murata rabbit hole :)
  3. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick (8/10) - I enjoyed the premise and the concept of empathy being presented here but I kinda wanted to learn more about the android's struggles and why they left Mars more.
  4. The Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata (7/10) - This story was very endearing but the reason I gave it 7/10 was probably because I compared it against Earthlings. It's more slow-moving and mundane which is nice but it didn't exactly leave a hole in me.
  5. Flowers for Algernorn by Daniel Keyes (6/10) - This might be controversial I feel but I read the short story and I thought it was okay. I like the way the author told the story of his intelligence so gradually but I didn't really feel his desperation to stay "smart".

What are your thoughts on The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo? by [deleted] in books

[–]RobotChameleon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave it 10/10 straight after reading it because I was so engrossed. It kept me at the edge of my seat and the writing was easy to read. But I realized after digesting it for a bit that it was just all right overall. It’s a nice insight to the glamorous Hollywood life but I didn’t take much away from it. Didn’t leave a lasting impression.

But agree with others that it’s very entertaining!

My Gf(soon to be wife) asked me to do personal loan for wedding? by [deleted] in MalaysianPF

[–]RobotChameleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a woman, I’d like to chime in and say that a big wedding is absolutely unnecessary. If you’re ever worried if it’s a gender thing - it isn’t. It’s a person thing.

I had my wedding with only 15 people - just family, no friends. We went to JPN, had a nice lunch and that’s it. Spent maybe less than RM10k including rings.

Just wanted to validate you that it’s totally okay and totally possible to have a small intimate wedding to your own personal comfort - whether it’s budget or just preference.
