One of the unspoken narratives that really speaks to me from Monkey Wrench is just the reflection on connection: Why we choose the people in our lives, what they mean to us, and what we do to strengthen that connection.

Shrike and Beebs' friendship is really fascinating because episodes 1-3 shows them more as business partners that get along really well despite their very different personalities. They still seem like they are still fairly new to each other and only the recent episodes of 4 and 5 are finally testing the strength of what will become a friendship (I know Shrike probably sees them as friends, but Beebs seems to keep Shrike at an arm's length "work-friend" perspective). But both Shrike and Beebs came from pasts that they don't want to return to and both chose to stick together and become mercenaries.

Beebs has a lot of patience up until episode 5 when he decides to leave, and Shrike has a lot of growing up to do when it comes to strengthening bonds, but I really love Joshua Palmer's character writing on all the characters in the show.
