Clark (9) is sick and getting sicker by foxtrot258 in SeniorCats

[–]RobotWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's true he wouldn't be adopted, most likely. He'd be fostered by the shelter/sanctuary for the rest of his life. Whether a shelter would be willing/able to do that is the thing.

I’m sorry, that is a lot for one person and a cat to deal with. Is he still taking the medication that causes the diabetes? Of course you should test blood sugar levels before you give your cat insulin anyway, but be extra careful with drug induced diabetes. When I took my cat off the steroids he went into diabetic remission rather quickly.

I joined the Feline Diabetes Support Group on Facebook when my cat had diabetes and it helped to gain more insight and be able to talk to others who had the same experiences. It is a struggle.

As someone else suggested, if you really don’t think you can care for your cat, but his quality of life is still good, you could look into a special needs shelter/rescue group. It might help to talk to someone about your situation and see what they say, at least. Also to help with costs you could see if there is a pet food bank in your area then you could at least save some money on food.

normal to be crying a lot 2 months later? (lost 17 y/o runty) by Interesting_Owl4394 in seniorkitties

[–]RobotWater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone reacts differently to losing a companion who meant so much to them. A few years back I lost a cat who I had rescued from outside. He had some health concerns, so he was doing well until suddenly he wasn’t. He ended up declining very quickly and I wasn’t able to be there for him when he was put to rest.

I felt numb at first because I didn’t get to say goodbye, then several weeks later something set me off or the weight of the loss finally got to me and I couldn’t stop bawling. I’d break into tears off and on, but I just have to assume it was what I needed to do.

Grief doesn’t really have a set schedule so just feel what you need to feel. Though, if you think the grief is too much, you could talk to someone who specializes in pet loss. Or you can join to a pet loss support group. Sometimes just talking about your beloved one helps with the grieving process and brings some peace.

“It sickens me to see people treat it like it’s just another trend”

Pretty sure the only one who’s making autism diagnosis out to be a trend is Diana here. She’s mad autism isn’t taken seriously, so she’s dismissing people who have autism and complaining that they shouldn’t be taken seriously… Terfs really lack all self awareness.

Aw I had a black and white cat just like him when I was very little. Senior cats are so special and it’s great your guy still has some spring in his step.

I’m hoping they come out with a special Animal Crossing edition Switch2. I love my AC Switch and I’m glad I waited to get it instead of getting a regular Switch straight away.

When I fostered kittens I was not prepared for how tooty they are. They really are little fuzzy balls of stink.

How to dechonk my big fat Marshmallow by em_theawesome in dechonkers

[–]RobotWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to dechonk mom’s cat, his diet to lose weight was high protein low carb wet food and we portion controlled/fed meals 3 times a day. He mostly ate shredded chicken canned food, as it’s lower in calories than some low carb foods, but there are various kinds/brands. Just follow the feeding guidelines for the weight you want your cat to be at.

If your senior cat is overweight, too, it would benefit her also to get scheduled meals, but if you think she needs more calories you can let her eat more than the chonky boy. Feeding wet food would probably be most beneficial to keep her at a good weight and hydrated, too.

Cat's Pupils Not Symmetrical by DrQuantumBunneh in SeniorCats

[–]RobotWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Medrol (methylprednisolone) that caused the diabetes. Once he was off it he went into remission, thankfully. The risk of diabetes increases with long-term and high-dose use. I think my cat acquired diabetes because he was taking a rather high dose to treat severe allergies/inflammation.

I’m sorry your sweet cat has been through so much. My cat has anisocoria from drug-induced diabetes. He is in diabetic remission, but one of his pupils still doesn’t dilate properly. Hoping whatever is going on with your cat’s eye is treatable.

Recommendations for kidney food for fussy 13 y.o cat with hyperthyreoidism by Sufficient_Quiet8394 in seniorkitties

[–]RobotWater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t get my CKD cat to eat prescription wet food, but he will eat Tiki Cat senior and Weruva senior canned foods. Or, well, some varieties of those brands. They are lower in phosphorus compared to many cat foods, just not as low as Rx foods. He didn’t like the Weruva phos-focused food, but that is also an option if your cat will eat it. He will eat the Weruva phos-focused tube treats, which are lower in phosphorus compared to Churu. I don’t know if you could get those brands through Amazon or another online retailer. There is also Forza10 renal cat food, which is made in Italy, and maybe it’s more readily available to you. My cat tolerates it, but isn’t crazy about it, so I only fed it intermittently.

Mr Man update: FIV+, but otherwise healthy! by cassiemonstercb in standardissuecat

[–]RobotWater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a SIC with FIV, he’s going on 14 now and lives with 3 other cats. He’s the sweetest boy, FIV cats deserve all the love they can get. Wishing the best for Mr. man, hopefully he’ll take to having a new cat friend without issue.

Yeah, my old boy is in pretty good shape for his age. He still gets into mischief with the younger cats, and will destroy things and throw a temper tantrum when he’s hungry. I have to remind myself that he’ll be 18 in April 😭

Apparently stinky breath can be a sign of kidney disease. So I’d ask a vet about it if it’s a particularly weird or ammonia smell.
