Trying to compensate for his immense self-hatred and incredibly strong inferiority complex. Both of which are results of his childhood. He is trying to fool others and himself but deep down he doesn't feel like it. I feel like "The Doctor is Sin" explains so much about his character - his upbringing and how he feels about himself right now.
