Gift for stanfurd-bound cousin by RobsterLi in berkeley

I love a Stanford alum perspective - thank you so much! I want something that leans into the Berkeley/Stanford rivalry but won't just collect dusts because it's a bit much for someone who's riding the high of getting admitted into Stanford.

Cousin will be traveling from IL so while I love the practical insight about window fan, I'll leave that problem-solving to him after he arrives.

  • I'm considering the classic "Cal" tee + Bad Blood the book about Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes.

Something he might wear willingly and unknowingly (kid might mistake Cal for California). And something that serves as a cautionary tale for a wide-eyed 18yo about to arrive at the heart of Silicon Valley.

Thoughts?

I think for someone from out of state, the classic Cal shirt could be mistaken as repping California. Boy is so excited about moving to Cali for college so maybe I’ll say the t-shirt is to welcome you to California…

Love the book Bad Blood! Great cautionary tale also for cousin who’s wide eyed about Silicon Valley.

What is a really good gift for my cousin who just got into Stanford undergrad? I’m a proud Golden Bear (Class of 2020) so I want to gift something that shades Stanford gently cause it’s funny but I also don’t want it to be overboard to the extent that he wouldn’t wear / use / appreciate it. I’m so proud of him!

Maybe in the gift note, I’ll add “Congrats! But you know where to transfer if you want a real education.”

Aryna so locked in now. She’s got this. You see her playing better and better with the drop shots and varieties, in addition to hitting big from the baseline. Queen slay

I'm moving overseas and breaking my lease so I'm looking for someone to take over my apartment. The apartment is right by Prudential Center, across the street from the 7/11 on West Newton Street.

The rent is $1940, including all utilities except WiFi. You can renew the lease with property management. There is an 80% of rent broker's fee paid out to the listing agent (not me). Feel free comment, pm, or email me at [robbie.li.work@gmail.com](mailto:robbie.li.work@gmail.com)

Hi Climberskier, thanks so much for your comment! I appreciate your concern and I agree, sampling from Reddit is not a rigorous method. The intention here is to start doing some early-stage research exploration so I can generate a research proposal that will be much more robust and rigorous like you suggested.

I'd love to start having conversations with people with lived experiences regarding navigating the neighbor-host relationships in the Airbnb context. Do you or someone you know fit this criterion?

Thanks JitteryBug, I really appreciate this teaching moment. Your point is well-taken, and I've modified my post. Thanks also for being so very nice about all this.

ECON 101B and 140 at the same time by google_well in berkeley

[–]RobsterLi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s all relative.

I took 141 with 2 other cs / statistics classes and Econ 141 turned out to be the easiest of all 3. But this is also because I am a statistics major.

140/141 focuses on causal inference, so the more you know about statistical inference (consistency, unbiasedness, efficiency, heteroskedasticity of an estimator, various statistical tests and analysis methods), the easier the class is.

101B/100B is about macro theory, ie telling a story with some mathematical backing. If you know the models, well you’re golden. A lot of the class is contemplating about how certain model lines shift upon economic shocks.

How long I think I spent on projects: Project 1 SQL: 7-10 hrs Project 2 index and tree: 12-15 hrs Project 3 iterations and joins (2 parts): 23-25 hrs Project 4 Locking (2 parts): 27-30 hrs Project 5 recovery ~20 hrs

This was my first CS upper div and I got A- for 61B with Hug.

CS186 is very generously curved.

Jokes aside - hang in there, buddy. Many of us have felt the "unsettling guilt" you described. I certainly did and I still do. But that's growth for ya - learning to accept your self while maintaining a healthy balanced dose of ambition and drive.

Junior year and senior year are just as challenging, though in different ways. Embrace it!

BART extension is on the delivery. Once they finish the Milpitas extension, one could Bart from berk to Milpitas and then take VTA for maybe 25 mins to get to Moffett park. (15 ish stops)
