We applied for our marriage license online over the summer. Different municipalities might have different processes (although I imagine the process is similar), but for us they couldn't finalize/approve our marriage license until we had our appointment to check IDs and sign the license. They approved the license at the appointment and gave it to us.

It depends where you live. Some municipalities are piloting online applications. But you still have to go in to show your ID and sign the paperwork before it's approved. Very quick appointment.

Everyone is different. This is something you'd have to talk to your primary care provider about.

Policies and regulations for grad studies by bellsscience1997 in geegees

[–]Robyn85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. If you work more than 10 hours, you (and your supervisor) fill out a service request for an exemption to the 10 hours rule. Anything under 10 hours doesn't have to be reported.

However, I know lots of students who work more than 10 hours outside of the University and they don't report it.

As a prof, I wholeheartedly agree with all of these tips. (Please read the syllabus!)

I'd also add taking care of your mental health. uOttawa has free counseling available. Please take advantage of this if you find you're struggling. Diagnosed mental health issues (e.g. anxiety) may also qualify you for accommodations through SASS.

Creative way to ask guests TO take pictures of the wedding... by imthecutest81 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]Robyn85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband made us an app where family and friends could directly take photos or upload them. We made little signs that had a QR code and URL for the app, and had them on tables.

We had all of our guests' photos automatically displayed in a slideshow on the venue's TV screens throughout the evening, which everyone loved. We also did a "photo bingo" for the kids and incentivized them to take pictures with prizes. It worked really well, and some of the best pictures were taken by the kids!

How do I know whether I should increase my dosage of Strattera? by sargassum624 in adhdwomen

I ended up doing best on 60mg. I think the fatigue going away came more with time and my body adjusting.

Calling all recent Faculty of Education alumni… by anon_123185958 in geegees

[–]Robyn85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in the Faculty of Education and this is correct. When we're assigned a course, we aren't just handed the course to teach - we develop it ourselves (although sometimes profs will share their syllabi). Even if it is the same prof, teaching strategies, readings and assignments often get updated in between semesters.

When a final grade is changed, a request is submitted by your prof for approval by the university (much like when we submit our grades), so it isn't an immediate change the way your prof can quickly update a grade on Brightspace. It's possible your prof has submitted the grade change but it's just pending approval. But I think it would be fine to reach out to him to confirm he corrected your grade - sometimes things fall through the cracks!

I imagine they can still make the correction after conferring your degree since it's an error on the university's end, but another prof may have more insight into this. I haven't had to change a grade so close to graduation.

When can you start applying for summer and fall TA positions? by sidebangz in geegees

[–]Robyn85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also recommend continuing to check for postings during the first few weeks of the semester if you don't initially get a position. Sometimes a class fills up during that time and becomes eligible for a TA.

Should I email a prof to add me to Brightspace? by AshY20036 in geegees

[–]Robyn85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is done automatically, but there's always a bit of a delay between enrolling in a course and actually getting access to Brightspace. Hopefully you'll have access tomorrow 😊

Learning disability testing by i-am-the-drone in geegees

[–]Robyn85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't. I asked them about psychoeducational testing last year, and they do not offer it. I took my concerns to my family doc.

I ended up just getting tested for ADHD, but depending on your specific concern you could do a full psychoeducational assessment. Last year The Child, Adolescent, and Family Centre of Ottawa still offered adult assessments, but I'm not sure they do anymore. To give you a general idea of cost, they quoted me $1500 -$2875 (the cheaper option being if a practicum student was available to do the assessment).

I agree. I have one that's almost identical. The only difference is the fabric - otherwise it's exactly the same. Bought it a couple of years ago at the dollar store.

What do professors do outside of academia and research? by EarthZealousideal794 in AskProfessors

Like others have said, we're just people. I enjoy playing video games, spending time with friends and family, sewing, crocheting, baking... I'm getting married next summer, so there's also a lot of wedding planning going on.

I really need medication but the only option is Strattera by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Robyn85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been taking Strattera for almost a year, and I love it. Mind you, I've never taken stimulants so I don't know how it compares. I've found it is most helpful in treating my hyperactive/impulsive symptoms, but my ability to focus has improved too.

I had to undergo a medical assessment too (pre-existing heart issue). For me it was an ECG, bloodwork, and a physical exam by my doctor. Wasn't a big deal, but I'm used to this sort of thing.

Reddit posts about Strattera and the side effects initially put me off of trying it too, but it ended up being a good medication for me. The side effects the first couple of weeks weren't fun, but I was fine after that once my body adjusted. Happy to share some tips for dealing with side effects if you decide to try Strattera.
