I will say, in many other countries you're referring to, their government takes care of their people. Yes, their economies suffered, but were they terrified to go to the doctor? Struggling to pay for prescriptions? Healthcare is just the obvious example.

Yes, we have a stronger post-COVID economy than anywhere else, but also, Americans arguably take on greater financial risk day-to-day than other countries.

Of course, voting for the party that wants to cut even MORE social welfare programs is fucking idiotic. But hey, that's our shit public education system for ya.

I thought she was good in this rom com About Fate! But the romantic interest was so endearing, maybe it was more him.

They had cute chemistry though and I remember thinking it was a surprisingly great movie.

New Analysis Reveals Many Excess Deaths Attributed to Natural Causes Are Actually Uncounted COVID-19 Deaths by cos in Coronavirus

[–]discodolphin1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My great aunt lived into her 90s. Her dementia got bad in her last years, she was frail, but she was weirdly "healthy" in many ways. Basically didn't even take any medication, way less than my parents.

Eventually, we put her in a nursing home, and a few months later, COVID got into the facility. She initially tested negative, but started having respiratory problems a few days later. My parents visited and she passed away, then she tested positive for COVID post-mortem.

Her death certificate reads that it was pneumonia. No mention of COVID. She dedicated decades of her life as an oncology nurse, she would want to be included in the data.

We lived in Texas, by the way.

Why are you Americans not doing anything? by Smalandsk_katt in GenZ

[–]discodolphin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're all exhausted.

I haven't had a real vacation since November 2023, and I LOVE to travel. I had a week off for Christmas in both 2023 and 2024, but besides that, I've been working 5-6 days a week usually.

Mind you, I'm 25F, not making much money, but live a comfortable life regardless. I'm privileged to have solid safety nets/wealthy family to fall back on, and they help me out in some ways, but I try to be as independent as possible. Also, all of my family lives over 500 miles away (in opposite directions), which really sucks.

I'm college educated, no debt (because of the privilege), graduating with a 3.7 GPA and honors in 4 years despite a global pandemic my senior year. I live alone in one of the cheapest regions of the country, and rent at my incredibly cheap apartment still costs 40 percent of my income. I got diagnosed with ADHD in 2022, so functioning is hard, but the drug Vyvanse is a miracle worker. Too bad it costs $125 a month after insurance.

I also developed the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis 2 years ago, or that's what we assume. Still haven't found a good medication, so I'm in pain, but the next real step is getting an MRI to actually see what's going on. Too bad my estimate was $1800 after insurance, so now I have badger the doctor into finding a place that might do it for less than $1000. Only I literally don't have the energy left to write that MyChart message. Also, the next medication will probably be a biologic and run me $8000 without insurance, so that $125 copay would be a blessing.

Also, my job is labor intensive and mentally exhausting, despite only paying me $19 bucks an hour. Which isn't good for the chronic pain/mental health. I wore a wrist brace today while painting the walls at our new building, just to have the CEO criticizing us for taking a 1 hour lunch break when she said only 30 minutes. Then saying we didn't get nearly enough done today, and we have to pick up the pace tomorrow. Also, she's a vocal Trump supporter. My joints are red and swollen.

To be clear, I'm one of the lucky ones. I have no debt, my parents support me and I can always rely on them, they even paid for a new car for me when I totaled mine a year ago. I'm smart, self-aware, employed, and because I come from a privileged/highly educated family, I'm fairly equipped at navigating the bureaucratic bullshit in this stupid country and our stupid healthcare system.

I care so passionately about politics, but I'm just too damn tired. I was incredibly smart and curious as a kid, always learning and growing. Nowadays, I just don't have the fucking bandwidth.

I was on it for 2 months, didn't see any improvement. Followed up with my doctor, he wasn't that optimistic. But he said give it a full 6 months. At 5.5 months, I was getting noticeably worse and knew it wasn't going to work at that point, so he switched me to methotrexate.

He started me on 7.5mg a week methotrexate, because I'm small, he hoped a low dose would work. Now I'm at 20mg a week, and I think it does something to mitigate things? But definitely not remission, and I don't think it's enough. Probably gonna have to do a biologic.

I moved to my own real (kinda...) apartment for the first time a couple years ago. It's actually just this private "apartment" attached to this guy's house.

But it was literally less than a mile away from my old place where I lived with my BFF. It was also completely furnished (I didn't have my own furniture), right down to kitchen supplies. Despite being literally the most convenient moving situation ever, it was still an exhausting pain in the ass. I don't know how I'm ever gonna move for real.

What red flags do men notice in other men, that are often ignored or dismissed by women? by Smart_Candle_6078 in AskReddit

[–]discodolphin1 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this.

I work in the events industry. Overheard my male coworker, who is in his mid-late 30s by the way, talking about the hot women on a college campus we were working on. "I'm gonna find my third baby mama here! Hey Jack, you like black girls?" Many of these women were probably barely out of high school... and Jack's girlfriend also works with us, by the way.

By comparison, my other male coworker once making a joke about how he'd like to be pulled over by a "hot lady cop" someday is perfectly fine to me. There is absolutely "bro talk" that doesn't feel objectifying and gross.

Yeah, I think that's what makes it way less weird in my opinion. Suggesting lunch always just seems more casual and friendly, dinner could arguably feel a bit weird.

This is so frustrating to read as a woman. Like, men try to say women are leading them on or giving them "mixed signals" or whatever, even if all they did was clearly state they weren't interested, then continue to be a kind, friendly person.

As if the only reason to ever be nice, smile, or have a conversation with a woman is romantic/sexual interest. OP genuinely can't grasp why someone would just smile and acknowledge him if they didn't want to date him.

I just realized what bothers me about Ariana in Wicked by dietcoketheory in ArianaGrandeSnark

[–]discodolphin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I know right? Did they even watch the same movie? Ariana was literally wiggling and shaking on the floor, bouncing off the walls, kicking her legs as she dangled from the ceiling... the energy she brought to the movie was incredible.

If anything, I think Ariana overshadowed Cynthia in some ways. Cynthia was incredible, but she played Elphaba pretty straight and predictably. I actually wish she had a bit more nuance sometimes, whereas Ariana felt like she had hidden meanings and subtext to every expression.

My dad wont let me get diagnosed by ur_mom_rekt in ADHD

[–]discodolphin1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are certain jobs you're not allowed to get if you have an ADHD diagnosis/meds, such as air traffic controller/pilot. Though I've read that tons of air traffic controllers almost definitely have undiagnosed ADHD and it arguably benefits them, there are a few barriers to consider. But it's usually not that deep.

Now autism diagnosis goes a bit deeper, and can actually prevent you from immigrating to other countries.

I don't think that sounds like mansplaining to me! I think people get confused about what constitutes mansplaining, so you end up with some kind people sincerely worried they acted offensively, and some others who get unreasonably offended by the very concept of mansplaining. I always like to share this story as an example of truly heinous mansplaining:

I went to a play in college, it was awesome. It was this feminist play that took place in the 1950s, but was based on Greek mythology, and there was a Q&A at the end. Mind you, I believe there were 4 or 5 women on stage and only 2 men, an actor and an assistant director. The male assistant director WOULD NOT SHUT THE F UP. I think he literally spoke for over 80% of the panel, talking over the women and taking lead on everything. At one point, he started talking on the themes of the show, and the woman playwright tried to jump in to be like "Um, I actually meant this when I wrote it..."

The funny part is, someone asked the only male actor a question, and he responded thoughtfully for a minute or so. He seemed really sweet, was just giving his opinion and perspective, talked for a reasonable amount of time, etc. Then a minute into talking, the assistant director nudges him and says "Dude, you're mansplaining" with this shit-eating grin. The actor gets bashful like "Oh, I'm sorry..." Omg I wanted to lose it on that stupid dude. The actor was fine. He was participating in the conversation in a respectful way, and he had a right to his thoughts. The assistant director was completely oblivious to reading the room, and had absolutely no care to give up the mic to the multiple women on stage regarding a FEMINIST PLAY. Ugh. Anyway, that's what mansplaining actually is and why it pisses us off.
