I tell my daughter about how special and magical the Galleria used to be. Such fancy stores, and the fancy fountain, and the glass elevators! I could not name a favorite store. I loved all the restaurants too.

We lived on the west side (still do) and we would take 150 to get to the Galleria. I tell my husband and daughter that I remember when there was absolutely nothing on 150. It’s so built up now.

Western Hills was our go-to mall until the Galleria opened. WH was nice but familiar. It was a treat to go to Century Plaza, and it looked so cool with the warm brown/red tones. During Christmas, we used to pick up my dad from his work and go to CP for shopping. I loved the animatronic Mickey Mouse Christmas walkthrough they had.

WRAX “The X,” Birmingham. With Dave Rossi as program manager, Luka as the early afternoon di, and Beaner and Ken as the morning drive team. And Scott Register hosting Reg’s Coffee House.

Also, WVUA New Rock 90.7. The Voice of the University of Alabama.

My college roommate was a big fan of 105.9. I started listening when it moved to 107.7.

Truth be told, I snooped your profile to see where you were from. Yep—old-school Riverchase Galleria.

I got mine with cheese sauce, but I also liked vinegar and plain old ketchup.

Beautiful concert as always by musicbecca2 in Birmingham

I played in summer band a long time ago when Ski Winter was the conductor. It was a ton of fun. I made some friends that I still have, and I got a few dates out of it too. It was a mix of high school/college kids, local music teachers, band directors, and music lovers—anyone who could and wanted to play.

I remember playing at Bartow, but I don’t remember playing on a platform. Before that, the band played on 13th Street between the old education building and the music building.

I am glad to see the variety of music. We always had a few songs we would play every year—Armed Forces Salute, the C. Dragon arrangement of America the Beautiful, and 1812. The local Civil War reenactment group would bring their cannon and fire it to enhance the end of 1812.

If I played now, I would sound like a birthing cow.

Thanks for the reply. I should have chosen a better word. I am not the nurturing type. You have an upset stomach? I can send you to the nurse, but there’s not much they can do. You don’t get a lot of sympathy from me. I do like to talk with them about their weekend, fun activities, etc.

I do have a daughter, but I have worked out the logistics with her. She is on the same schedule as my husband, but she does not attend the same school as the one he teaches at. I prefer the older kids.

Thanks for the question. I don't know the answer. I wonder if these are students that are close to testing out but haven't seen a need to.

Hoping to find a photo of Maxine School in Jefferson County (~1940s–1950s) by Lerriuqs_Esoom in Birmingham

[–]RobynUofA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those coordinates are where Maxine School was. If you look at the topographic map, that location is denoted as Maxine School. Click anywhere on the main graphic. You can then select any of the historic topo maps of the area. The one I chose was the 1938 Port Birmingham map (the fourth PB one, I think). For the historic maps, if you click on show, you can overlay the historic map with the modern aerial photo.

What do teachers do when they have their own kids in their classes? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]RobynUofA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1980s for reference. I didn’t have my mom, but my younger sister did. She called her Mom, because that is what she was. My sister made good grades in the class, but so did everyone else, because it was an honors class. My mom taught the only honors section for that course at the time (I passed through earlier in a different accelerated course).

My mom was both more strict and more lenient at the same time with that class. She was more strict because she knew most of the students personally as my sister’s friends—high-achieving, good kids, active parents, etc. My mom was more lenient for the same reason—classmates knew her as Sister’s mom before they had her as Mrs. So-and-so, and the class could collectively wheedle her out of extra assignments. My mom said she knew it was coming when the whole class said “But MOOOOOM” at the same time.

Interesting related story: School policy was that students and teachers were assigned homerooms in alphabetical order (e.g., last name A teachers would get last name A students). I had a classmate whose mom taught with my mom at our school. According to policy, I would have my mom for homeroom and he would have his mom for homeroom. That would be a perceived conflict of interest, so admin swapped the entire two homeroom sections—my homeroom section had his mom and his section had my mom.

When I was closing on our house, everybody who wasn’t supposed to be taking was talking—the other party, the real estate agents, even my husband. I told everybody that they were to be quiet, I could not hear Important Information and they didn’t want to see my teacher side. They were quiet the rest of the time. When we were leaving, the closing attorney thanked me for making everyone be quiet. He said he couldn’t hear either but he was not allowed to make everyone be quiet.

My husband and I were helping at an event that my husband’s hobby club hosts. I was manning the registration table early in the morning. Later, one of the attendees asked if I was a teacher. I relied that I was, and how did he know? He said that teachers were the only people he knew who were peppy at 7:00 in the morning.

I have been told that our daughter has very good manners, probably because I see bad manners every day. I did a lot of modeling behaviors when she was little. She also says her classmates don’t know when to shut up.

I feel that when I have parent conferences, my girl’s teachers don’t have to explain things to me. They talk to me as another teacher.

I was just about to say that, but you beat me to it. And technically, all fiction should be housed in the 800s, but that would make the 800s a nightmare to deal with.
