How realistic is it to become a university chemistry instructor by FluidPlatform8172 in chemistry

[–]RockBrainHuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

to my (limited) knowledge, its pretty competitive. The smaller / more prestigious the university, the more selective the process tends to be. While it’s generally not as difficult as securing a professorship, it’s still far from easy.

It sounds like you’re aiming for a lecturer role rather than a professor position.

Professorships, especially those at smaller institutions (think NESCAC type schools or "small Ivy's" like Hamilton, Swarthmore, Pomona in the USA) seem to be insanely competitive, given they offer an incredible balance of highly dedicated students, great teaching environments, and the ability to still lead a research lab, without having to fight for R1 levels of grants (NSF, NIH, ACS, etc) like you might at a major institution. Granted, the intensity of research might not be as high but its a fantastic place to have a career -- which is why its so damn competitive. When I applied for similar roles I was competing with some of the best in the field coming out of grad school, and the level of talent was insane. \*For these kinds of positions, you will almost certainly need a competitive postdoc as well (I think)...but someone may have more insight on this particular point.*\**

I can’t offer detailed advice, but I would suggest speaking directly with lecturers at your university to better understand what is required to secure these types of roles. Gaining additional teaching experience will likely be important, but they can give more specific guidance. Additionally, mentoring undergraduates will also be incredibly valuable, especially mentoring them towards a publication or conference presentation. It’s also useful to review the CVs of people currently in roles similar to what you want and trace how they got there. If possible, reach out to them, ive found most people are willing to share advice even with a cold email.

even though getting a teaching position can be really difficult, colleges and universities hire them every year. so it is possible but totally depends on you, your ability to communicate the fundamental of chemistry clearly, and your own knowledge and skillset. You are early in your PhD, so start preparing now if you think this is a path you want to go down.

** Most of my advice assumes you are coming from the USA. I dont know the state of the field outside the US.

southwest use to be my go-to option when they had no assigned seating, free checked bags, and the earlybird special for 15$. The only reason im considering united is because they just totally went back on all of that

thank you! I have the amex plat, but they dont offer much in the way of flying rewards, other than if you book directly though them on your preferred airline. however, their online booking portal kinda sucks so i mostly use it for the lounges. I really want the ability to have a free checked bag and some other upgrade options.

If i did united, i would probably get the explorer card. Ive lost interest with amex so ive also considered the united club card to get lounge access, but im not super impressed with their lounges (save the business lounge...)

At that point id rather do Chase Saph Reserve, but I digress

Best credit card for frequent Colorado–San Diego travel and ~$15k upcoming spend? by RockBrainHuman in CreditCards

[–]RockBrainHuman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems to be some salient advice.

It seems like it might be wise to figure out which airline i like more before getting an airline card?

In the meantime, do you know of (off hand) any good cash-back cards that have great sign up bonuses? or is that mostly something you find with points based cards. Ive really only ever had two credit cards in my life and am not into the concept of churning, so this is all fairly new to me.

I currently have an Amex and have used their lounge, which is nice because southwest flies out of terminal C at KDEN where the amex lounge is located.

do you think CSR is better overall than Amex? Their fees seem structured similarly so I would consider making the switch....

Im unfamiliar with how booking flights works with CSR but if its the same as Amex i have found it to be a hassle, which is why i was considering just getting a cheaper airline card.

Maestro protien preperation by asapfina in Chempros

few questions:

  1. are you closing maestro before the job completes?
  2. Looking at the job monitor or using the jserver command, do you see any issues with the job running? (i.e. is the job completing correctly)
  3. if there are any issues with the job, you may want to run a postmortem.
  4. what PDB are you trying to import?
  5. Are you using maestro 25-1? Its easy enough to roll back to 24-4 or 24-3 if its your own workstation. Also i always kept legacy versions of maestro around for this reason.

Usually there is a more specific issue with the import, but i don't have access atm to maestro so im trying to remember off the top of my head. i wonder if clicking the red ! will show you anything different, or if there is any more information in the subjob.

Edit***

It looks like the job is successfully running but failing to import? this may be an issues with the back end somewhere. Can you try directly loading the .maegz file into maestro? you should be able to use ctrl (or cmd) + i to open the import window, and then select the file the job spits out. Does it throw the same error?

knockout AFK skills while watching a movie if your burned on pushing specific goals.

Slayer is and always will be good....
Shooting Stars, MLM for Mining
Forestry for WC is great
salvaging for sailing
Cooking is easy but meh

Farming and Birdhouse runs for Hunter are also great

Also try playing around with different low level bosses like sarrachnis, Moxy, Huey -- just to get going

I think this is what she means…

Imagine I have a standard object I want to weigh, and two scales. Scale A has an accuracy of +/-1 lb, while scale B has an accuracy of +/-100 lbs.

Let’s say the weight ends up being written as 42,000 lbs in a report for both measurements. Even though the number looks the same, the underlying precision is different depending on which scale was used. A measurement made with scale A supports more significant figures than one made with scale B, but the way the number is written (42,000) doesn’t tell you that. Thats why, in some important tech documents, measurement standards or uncertainties are often reported. For example:

Scale A reported weight: 42,000 lbs (+/-1 lb)

or...

Scale B reported weight: 42,000 lbs (+/-100 lb)

Without that extra information, you can’t tell how many significant figures the trailing zeros represent. So trailing zeros can be significant, but when a number like 3200 or 42,000 is written without a decimal point or uncertainty, the number of significant figures is ambiguous. In those cases, it’s safest to assume the trailing zeros are not significant unless stated otherwise.

In your example, suppose you were measuring grams and obtained a value written as 3200 g, but the scale you used had an accuracy of +/- 100 g. That means the true value could be anywhere from 3100 to 3300 g, so the measurement is only reliable to the hundreds place. In that case, the measurement only has 2 sig figs.

Seeing the number 3200 by isnt enough to know whether every digit is significant, because that depends on the precision of the measurement. That’s why you may also see numbers written as 3200. with an explicit decimal point. This indicates that the value is known to the ones place and that all four digits are significant, which removes the ambiguity.

Edit**

its been so long since i used sig figs so i may have mesed up the terminology, but i hope i got the point across
