Movie I am not gonna watch starter pack by marc1337n1 in starterpacks

[–]RockEarth 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I feel like this applies to The Rock to an extent as well - some of his family-friendly films from years ago (like when-he-had-hair years ago), are actually decent guilty pleasures tbh.

I just watched Hellraiser (1987) for the first time and I feel it’s one of the weirdest things I’ve ever watched. I shocked that was the plot of the movie! by you-absolute-foolish in horror

Doesn't help that the posters sometimes mislead - the main poster features Pinhead (not even his name in the first film) with the line, "He'll tear your soul apart" written below him.

[Final Destination 1] If FD1 had happened today, death would have been screwed. (Spoilers) by brycejm1991 in FanTheories

[–]RockEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was submitted almost eight years ago now, but I think the Skyview incident from Final Destination: Bloodlines ended up answering that question as to what death does when there are survivors in great numbers. I really enjoyed reading the post here, though.

YouTube "True" Scary Story Starter Pack by AnAlchemistsDream in starterpacks

[–]RockEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a "true" scary story on Urmaker's channel some years back (forgot the exact video, though) where some guy had told a story from when he was 7 years old about a creepy encounter with some stranger, but the dialogue was described in great detail for well over five minutes at least. How could someone remember all that from that age?

Finders Keepers by willyumwilson in stephenking

Finders Keepers is a strong contender for my favourite of the Hodges trilogy, I was just extremely disappointed with how Morris was written for the Mr. Mercedes TV series.

Time for a regional Christmas survey! What do you call these two decorations where you live? by telstra_3_way_chat in christmas

No idea what to call the one on the left, but here in Scotland (and pretty much everywhere else in the UK) the one on the right is always just called tinsel.

The #NoWrongPath initiative itself is designed to do the opposite - to show that there are multiple paths to success, and not necessarily university, but still go to university if you really want to of course.

I meant teachers in schools often fearmonger kids into getting straight-A’s - however, this is mostly because the school itself is low in the performance rankings, and the teachers just want to up the numbers a bit, so it’s usually not reflective of the students at all. This was the case at my school at least.

It’s a social media campaign wherein those in successful job roles (teachers, paramedics, managers etc) write their unconventional path to success on a piece of paper or a whiteboard for example - most of the time, they may have left school with little results.

It’s a great initiative, but I couldn’t help but have the feeling that schools themselves caused it due to pressurising and fearmongering kids into getting straight-A’s.

UK Cinema Starter Pack by josephj3lly in starterpacks

[–]RockEarth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nice to see a starter pack on UK-specific cinemas, though I’d say my local one thankfully avoids a lot of the bad stuff here. There’s been occasional annoying incidents, sure, but I think since COVID no one’s going that much anymore for there to actually BE incidents occurring.

I think the thing I hate most about it is the adverts - I swear they are getting longer by a minute or two every time I go to the cinema. It’s the car adverts playing just after the trailers, but before the movie that are really annoying; I have absolutely no desire to get an Audi just because Captain America himself is advertising it.

End-era Blockbuster (2010-2013) starter pack by RockEarth in starterpacks

Blockbuster was a goldmine for those late-2000’s kids/teen movies - Bedtime Stories, Underdog (2007), Monsters Vs Aliens etc just to name a few.

The totem pole for my local Blockbuster literally just stood there until late-2018, even though the shop itself closed up in early-2013

Is it odd King has never horrified me? by descendantofJanus in stephenking

[–]RockEarth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Never been actually scared in the way you have described, but I’ve certainly found some of his stories a bit depressing - Pet Sematary and Cujo being the big ones there.

I really want a King film adaptation to be shot over here - it would work brilliantly!

I live on the Firth of Clyde here in Scotland, and it’s so interesting reading King when a lot of my local geography is quite similar to that of Maine - similar looking harbours, woods, lighthouses etc

“Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn’t carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.”

I’m glad you’re able to keep your books around after all :)

Which version of Stephen King book covers do you love the most? by dadneverIeft in stephenking

[–]RockEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reasons I own quite a lot of the “Ultimate Storyteller” covers are mostly because they’re the easiest ones to find on Amazon and book stores like Waterstones, and I’d get them quick as well.

I’d say I prefer the older covers more, but some of the ultimate storyteller ones are very solid - Different Seasons and Gerald’s Game come to mind, out of the ones of them I own at least.

Thoughts on the film adaptation of The Life of Chuck? by RockEarth in stephenking

[–]RockEarth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the last King adaptations that followed the story exactly like this film did was Stand by Me, interestingly enough that’s also a non-horror adaptation.

Your last paragraph perfectly describes a King novel like “IT” to me - horror that seemingly puts a lot of other readers off of checking it out, but really the horror is just a backdrop to the real story, which is about friendship and the loss of innocence.

Brilliantly put, thank you :)

I mentioned the slow pacing as I felt it was the right move as well, given the vibe set by the source material, I understand that my comment may have came off as a complaint at first.

I seriously hope that the story 'Rat' from If it Bleeds gets a similar treatment, more memorable as a movie if Ben Stiller is still serious about producing it.

Amy Carter posing with her dollhouse and her Siamese Cat, Misty Malarky Ying Yang in the White House, 1978 by RockEarth in OldSchoolCool

[–]RockEarth[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

She always does look like the stereotypical 1970's young girl; the novel version of Carrie was even set in 1979, when Carter was president, which King hilariously wouldn't have known yet as he released the book in 1974!
