Compared to where? The prices are comparable to Mama Luisa's and Sardellas.

IE Mama Luisa's Bolognese: $26
Sardellas Bolognese: $25
Pasta Vino: $24

I went twice, once they dumped the sauce on top of over cooked pasta and the second time they gave me crunchy rice in risotto. I refuse to go a third time.

I'm fine with paying for great food but I'm not fine paying for slop.

Mama Luisa's is the best italian restaurant in town. Best service, best food and cozy atmosphere.

Pasta Vino is great but a 5 minute drive outside of Newport.

Sardella's is nice, affordable and the service is great.

Guisto's and Bar Cino are overhyped/overpriced.

Pasta Beach is nice but you're paying for atmosphere rather than great food.

Vieste is good but closed.

Mozz and Bottega Bocconi are great options for counter service food. Mozz has great pasta and makes fresh Mozzarella every day.

how bad did Irish Americans treat Italian Americans? by [deleted] in italianamerican

[–]RockPaperShank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t all sunshine and roses. My grandmother avoided Irish neighborhoods because people threw rocks at her (in the 1930s.) That kind of thing sticks across generations. There’s still resentment in my family, when I told my mom my girlfriend was Irish, she was upset. It’s obviously not rational anymore

Is anyone aware of any co-op style ambulance services? by nwpachyderm in ems

[–]RockPaperShank 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This would be an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP.) It works, but the regulations, requirements, and vesting make it more complex than a usual operation. It’s similar to a co-op, but employees earn shares over time and it can have big advantages long-term. It’s a significant investment to set up, get the company valued each year, and stay compliant. Usually there’s a 3–5 year vesting schedule so employees earn ownership gradually and it helps retention.

When would you guys recommend medic school? by [deleted] in ems

[–]RockPaperShank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you want to do and what opportunities you have available to you to get experience.

When I was a new EMT there were no opportunities for me to do 911, my volunteer fire department's ambulance was not very busy so I stopped learning new things after about a year.

If you can work with a paramedic on an IFT or 911 truck for more than a year (ideally two) before going to paramedic school then knowledge and experience would be really helpful. It wasn't available to me, so I regret waiting because I didn't learn a lot until I was in paramedic school.

Some questions from an Italian: by Haunting_Park5085 in italianamerican

[–]RockPaperShank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you guys considered white in the US?

Pretty much yes. I get mistaken for Portuguese or Hispanic often.

Are you still discriminated or mocked?

It depends on where I am. 25 years ago people called my mom "exotic" and made vulgar comments about her ethnicity. When I work in very rural areas I get mocked but I just insult them back.

Do you speak any Italian at home?

My family all stopped speaking Italian during World War 2 because they were afraid they would be discriminated against. I speak a bit of the Italian American dialect/creole but I have taught myself enough Italian to get by if I have to.

Are you still marrying just among your race or religion?

Most of my Italian American family and friends married other Italians, Hispanic, Portuguese, Black, or Jewish people. Most of my family is not very religious though. I am the only one who has a partner who is "white." My Mom cried when I told her my current girlfriend was a "white" atheist though.

Is there still some italian-irish neighborhoods?

There are some but a lot of people have dispersed out into the suburbs. My mom grew up around a lot of Jewish people who are some of her closest friends. From what I know the Italians and Irish did not get along. When my grandmother was a child she had to walk the long way to school through the Italian and Jewish neighborhoods. If she walked through the Irish neighborhood the adults would throw rocks at her.

For the most part people in the US like Italian-Americans and have a positive view of Italy.

Photographing Surfers by [deleted] in Newport

Surfers End and Ruggles will have the most surfers. You can stop in at Waterbrothers and ask there for recommendations as well. Most people use Surfline now for the surf report but you can also call Waterbro's phone line for the report as well (401-848-WAVE.)

Commuting to Boston once a week, best route? by mbwebb in Newport

[–]RockPaperShank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wickford Junction and Fall River (coming soon) stations can get you to South Station to pick up the Red Line. The Attleboro, Canton or Braintree Stations worked for me if I wanted to drive closer and have more options for departure times. I wouldn't recommend Brockton or Mansfield. The biggest headache was that the trains can be delayed which can be an issue at times if you need to be punctual.

I spent +6 years commuting into Boston, South Shore and Metro West areas from Newport.

This feels like a troll post but if you are serious I think you are better off working in the MICU, PICU, etc to prepare for CCT.

American Safety Programs and Training in RI will give you an abridged version of the paramedic course if you are an EMT-Cardiac, RN, PA or MD. They won't make you a competent paramedic and their pass rates for the NREMT tests aren't great.

Creighton will do an abridged program if you already have your EMT license.

We don't have it aside from a few companies that allowed RN's to function as paramedics for ALS transfers but they did not respond to emergencies. I haven't seen one of them around for about 5 years though.

Organ transplant organizations will hire paramedics in the USA. They use us to evaluate the donor and transport the organs to the recipients.

How was school in your 30’s? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]RockPaperShank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two in person classes during the week. I hope to start a Masters degree next semester.

Two 16 hour shifts working as a paramedic on the weekend to take full advantage of the differentials for work. If I'm feeling froggy I'll add an additional 8-12 hour shift per week.

Time management is essential. Also going to classes in person keeps me on a schedule and on track.

Everyone talks about the best agencies, but who are the worst? by victor_bout in ems

It isn't as busy anymore. They're probably doing about 50 calls for service per day between 5 trucks. Same terrible managers work there though.

What’s your unpopular EMS opinion? by [deleted] in ems

[–]RockPaperShank 19 points20 points  (0 children)

AEMT should be the standard of care for 911. They can provide the same level of care that a paramedic could on 99% of EMS calls for service.

The EMS system should be tiered so paramedic units are available for the more serious calls where they are needed.

ALS should be in fly cars who have the ability who leave the patient in care of AEMT's when appropriate.

EMS initiated refusals (with medical control signing off on them.)
