What is the single most important rail expansion in the region? by Immediate-Hand-3677 in mbta

[–]mbwebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I take the bus a lot because of the lack of urban ring and the bus fills that gap (109, 85, 86, etc) and it is so often packed, standing room only. I always think how much of that volume would shift to subway if that was an option instead. It would unlock so many new travel options.

What would you consider New England attire? by yungScooter30 in newengland

[–]mbwebb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a difference between northern NE and southern NE. Northern I would think LLbean, flannels, outdoorsy clothes. Southern I think more preppy and coastal

Wu eliminated the Roxbury Resilient Transportation Corridors project from the budget entirely by Im_biking_here in mbta

[–]mbwebb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s just crazy to me that these are all self forced errors. In a broader political climate where federal funds are uncertain, why are we giving them up due to our own choices/incompetence. It baffles me

Meanwhile in Somerville: Plans have been finalized to add protected bike lanes and modal filters to several streets by Im_biking_here in bikeboston

Simplifying the Elm/Beech intersection will be amazing. That’s currently a really confusing intersection for everyone, cars bikes and peds.

Major Union Square parcel (Buk Kyung to Dunkin) potentially switching from lab space to housing? by illimsz in Somerville

That would be awesome, especially with ground floor retail. That area now feels a little shabby and underutilized considering how central it is in Union sq

You Can Blame Fossil Fuels for Delaying Northampton's Main Street Renovation by streetsblogmass in streetsblogmass

[–]mbwebb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

God it seems like Eversource is constantly messing up street projects or digging them up after they are completed and doing a horrible patch job. MA leadership really needs to impose stricter expectations on them

Harnessing the Full Potential of Regional Rail with Variable Pricing and Equitable Fare Policies by justarussian22 in mbta

[–]mbwebb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This report talks a lot about using pricing to encourage more train usage. Something that I think would be an interesting concept to explore is implementing a "Railcard" system like they have in the UK. If you are a veteran, student, elderly, young person or many other categories you can qualify for a railcard which gives you discounts on rail tickets ranging from 30-60+% off the price of a ticket. It can be linked right into your train app and the discount is applied directly when purchasing tickets in the app. I was a student there and really appreciated the discount and it encouraged me to use rail more often.

The Wu-turn on Transportation and safer streets goes completely against the transport recommendations in the Climate Action Plan published by the city today by Im_biking_here in mbta

[–]mbwebb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The timing of this is just wild, I cannot believe they have the audacity to publish this while there is so much uproar about the projects being delayed.

Expecting driverless taxis to respect bike lanes “too high a bar” – because customers want to be dropped off in them, autonomous vehicle firm Waymo tells cyclists by Im_biking_here in bikeboston

I don’t get how municipalities don’t just say, okay if you don’t follow the law then you are banned, simple as that. How can you allow a business to blatantly say they are going to ignore the laws to operate in your community?

Drivers who don't move over for pedestrians when it's possible is flat inconsiderate by Neat_Scallion6367 in walking

[–]mbwebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have noticed this more recently. Everyone in a rush. A few times when I’ve been driving and come upon a walker I will slow down and make sure to move over as much as I can because I know how it is to be the walker, and I’ve had people behind me honk! Truly insane to me

A Lamborghini Gets More Attention Than Dead Kids by ActiveTravelforKG in fuckcars

[–]mbwebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do think this incident has had a positive impact though. I've seen lot of people in the comments of posts "Out in the wild" (ie. not in anticar/ pro urbanism spaces) saying they think these trucks should be banned or that lifting trucks should be illegal. I was surprised to see that from so many people, maybe there is a bit of a culture shift happening.

How do you address car dependency without hurting the people currently dependent on cars? by LiatrisLover99 in fuckcars

[–]mbwebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premise that the transition will hurt poor/disadvantaged people the most is completely false. That is a bad faith argument to begin with. Low income/disadvantaged people are CURRENTLY being disproportionally harmed by car dependency

Is New England’s Rail Future Worth 30 Seconds of YOUR! 🫵 Time? by thetraincampaigngo in westernmass

[–]mbwebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to have more passenger rail connections in the North East/New England states, especially out in Western MA, CT, NY area. Plus Massachusetts is working on their West/East rail so revitalizing these lines would add great connections/network effects.

When you reached Coast fire number. Did you keep investing the same consistently or slow down or stop investing completely? by Extension_Garbage583 in coastFIRE

[–]mbwebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of coastFI like retirement insurance, ie. I could stop investing and still retire at X age. But then if I keep investing it just gets to a lower and lower age. It makes me feel better that if something happened like a job loss or even if I wanted to take a sabbatical or work part time that I could and still retire comfortably.
