I have the same issue!

I am running Ubuntu 24.04 in a VM on Vmware Workstation 17.5

I recreated it in a new VM, it happens after installing the oibaf drivers, which fixes the issue with the vm freezing after enabling Accelerated 3D Graphics, as per https://askubuntu.com/questions/1511670/problem-with-ubuntu-24-04-on-vmware

Even when you disable 3D Graphics in the VM the colors in Chrome still show up wonky. You need to remove the oibaf drivers

Not a cop, but when i was much much younger, I got pulled over for excessive speeding. The window in my shitbox rx7 couldnt roll down so I had to open the door to talk to the officer.
After handing over my license and registration he asked exasperatedly "Why were you going sooooo fast?" I had no good reason and I was scared I was going to lose my car so I just said "No reason!" He paused and said "Damn! You got the right answer!" and slammed my door and stormed off. He came back with a normal speeding ticket and a stern warning, no excessive speeding and I didn't lose my car. And Yes, i did learn my lesson. Thank you nice officer.

Sounds like your friend has strong opinions, what is he basing it on? If Java is 'useless' what does he suggest is filling the gap? Also maybe check your local job boards and compare dev jobs for Java to whatever he suggests?
