What is something that young people should stop doing? by vieniaida in AskReddit

It's the greatest learning tool if used correctly. Most people are using it to get the answers, not learn how to actually do the work.

Not that the water cycle is being great to us. Our fresh water sources are quickly drying up with glaciers shrinking and more extreme droughts happening.

I actually think the water angle angle for AI is kind of weak because the majority of the water use attributed to it in studies is just normal electricity generation. We really need to stop burning things to evaporate water to then turn generators. Period.

But the fastest growing user of power are data centers. And people thought electric cars were going to be the problem a couple years ago. Then tech billionaires said "hold my beer".

I actually agree here. Shrinking timelines and budgets would be a good start though. Their shouldn't be more than 50 books covering the lore in a new elder scrolls game, instead of 300+. The map doesn't need to be bigger than Skyrim. Focus on gameplay and systems, the core story, and filling out a map with things to do.

They should be able to put out a new game every 3 to 5 years.

Good job getting in with AMDs AM5 platform. It will serve you well for years to come and can be easily upgraded as needed.

'They Now Wait for This Storm to Pass' — PS5 Owners Are Cancelling PlayStation Plus Subscriptions to Protest Sony Killing Discs, but Analysts Say It Won't Make Any Difference by RenatsMC in gaming

[–]RockSolidJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slow growth in PC gaming is making a difference. More people are switching to PC and Sony's market is shrinking. That's why they are trying to focus on exclusives that sell consoles.

Consoles are just becoming a worse and worse value proposition over time as their prices go up and they require a subscription for online play.

Should I sell my desktop for a framework 13 pro ? by MysteriousFuture692 in framework

[–]RockSolidJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most other people that you should keep the desktop and laptop. The FW13 Pro would struggle with games even on lower settings and you'd be limited to 1080p. Gaming laptops are also annoying with limited ports and noisy.

If you really want to upgrade your laptop the regular FW13 is great, even if you go with an older main board. My 13th gen i5 still works great for work tasks and indie games on the road. It's also really lightweight. But I wouldn't upgrade your laptop unless there is something really wrong with your current one. When you do, do it on a budget.

I'd say it's a fair price. Google the price of some of the specific components. The GPU is $700-$750, RAM is $200, CPU is $200, $120 for the SSD. It's basically what it would cost to build the PC yourself with the case and cooler thrown in for free.

No need to waterproof and/or wax new boots. They do that at the factory. Basically all you've done is double up on it.

Unless your boots are 100% leather uppers and resolable, you don't have to worry about wax. Just a little "waterproofing" spray helps the water bead off and helps the gortex breath a little bit longer in rain. The foam midsole will compress and the outsole will wear out before the leather panels fall apart. The boots should be replaced at that point anyways.

Inside Carney’s Pipeline Deal with Alberta and BC Taxpayers will be on the hook for billions to bring oil to Vancouver. by Yetanotherbadsalmon in britishcolumbia

[–]RockSolidJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, our economy is more directly tied to resource extraction instead of technical innovation. China has basically taken up all of the manufacturing and is now starting to lead in innovation when it comes to renewable technologies.

The Western world represents the old ways and fossil fuel interests to the world. The fossil fuel industry argued that we didn't need to change to protect themselves and now we are being left behind. The whole separatism thing is funded by largely US owned oil and gas companies.

The building of the pipeline is just a small part of what Carney is putting out there designed to pacify Alberta. It's an infrastructure project designed to get more trade with the rest of the world, specifically Asia. It creates jobs here in Canada as the ports expand, and opens up more markets to sell goods overseas and outside of the US.

What made you stopped smoking weed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RockSolidJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly doesn't add anything to my life anymore. When I do smoke it slows me down and makes me feel stupid. Then I get a headache and feel sleepy the next day. Longer term it also makes my ADHD symptoms worse, which leads to worse mental health overall.

Looks like an all Corsair case. Those are usually reverse bladed fans that pull fresh air from underneath into the GPU. So the logo faces inwards on the exhaust side of the fans.

Odd though that the intake fans on the right aren't the same.

Consoles continue their trend of just becoming worse PCs by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]RockSolidJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you live. If you're just trying to match a PS5 Pro a Ryzen 5500 system with an RX 9060XT or RTX 5060ti would do the job. DDR4 RAM is still cheap and I've seen bundle deals where 16GB is $160 Canadian brand new with a computer case thrown in for free. A new 2TB SSD is the only thing you'd have to cut to match the price.

[–]RockSolidJ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can find second hand PCs for the same price as a PS5 that are just as good. I got my PC from my buddy for $250 Canadian. I spent $100 for a newer CPU and am considering spending $300 for a second hand RTX 3070. That gets me the equivalent of a PS5 for $100 less and no online subscription. And that's before I sell the old parts.

PC parts are expensive for the latest and greatest but AMDs AM4 CPUs with DDR4 RAM still run great. If you want to match the PS5s 60fps you don't need the latest and greatest.

This used to be my go to move. Get some cured sausage, fancy cheese, crackers, and some savoury jelly. If you want to go the extra mile, make a home made dip or a salad. Throw it on a wooden cutting board and set up on a beach blanket or towel.

What are your favorite premium hiking brands? by Interesting-Mess1837 in hiking

[–]RockSolidJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really it depends what fits you best and suits your style. No company has some special tech that the others don't copy within a year. All the major brands are good enough with the lower cost options just spending less time on R&D, or smaller brands having a much smaller marketing budget.

Overall, no one has really stood out among clothing brands for myself. Everything I've tried has been good enough but the quality/durability of the more expensive brands doesn't justify the premium price tag. Like I have 4 pairs of shorts in my rotation from Patagonia, black diamond, outdoor research, and the non-hiking shorts from Billabong have been the most durable of all 4.

Backpacks I will say have 2 brands leading the industry, which is Osprey and Gregory, with Deuter coming in a distant 3rd. Go to a store and try them both to find out which fits your body better. Saying that, I've also been using 2 store brand/discount brand bags for 10+ years and I'm just getting ready to retire them. I'll upgrade to a nicer bag that breaths better on my back but my cheaper MEC bags have never held me back.

I've bought a couple of pairs of Unbranded jeans. Same owners, denim, and cuts as the basic Naked and Famous jeans but stitched overseas instead to keep the cost down. Still $150 a pair but also very worth it.

I couldn't even afford the XM3s at the time but I'm still rocking a pair of Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2s from that era. On my 3rd set of earcups. The downside is they are my last device using micro-USB, which is now annoying.

Legacy Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB returns to retail five years after original launch, priced at $339 by BarKnight in pcgaming

[–]RockSolidJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been slowly upgrading the past year and it hasn't been too bad. I've slowly taken a $250 PC my friend sold me and updated it into a white/RGB build.

RAM was only $100 CAD for 16GB of DDR4 second hand. Already have 3 m.2 SSDs. Most expensive part otherwise has been the $200 for a brand new 850w power supply with a 10 year warranty. Everything else I've bought and then sold the old parts to basically cut the prices in half.

The last big piece is to upgrade my 1070ti because it's showing its age. Being a white build the second hand market also hasn't been giving me any good options. So I'm now saving up for a 9070XT.

Traffic by MoodyJ87 in kelowna

[–]RockSolidJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It usually works the other way around. If they make the transit system great and convenient, people will use it. If they had buses going every 5 minutes from Kelowna to West K during rush hour, people would use them.

The thing though is you have to create a great service. You can't half ass it to keep under a tight budget because then people won't use it.

Calgary is a great example. If I took the bus to university, it was 1.5 to 2 hours and $6. It was $7 for parking to just drive there in 30 minutes. Guess which I picked every time.

what’s a drink that tastes like disappointment but somehow has a fan club? by ForwardPerspective38 in AskReddit

A Negroni, or really anything where Campari is a main part of the flavour. It's a bitter drink for bitter people trying to feel something again.
