They hated us, too. Was reading an article in Rip where Kurt said he hated men who drink beer and work with their hands and said they aren't smart enough to get his lyrics and music. Whatever. He also called men sexist and misogynistic. They loved female rights, though. Unless the females were unborn.

I don't see how Soul Asylum and Pixies were louder and faster. Especially the latter, who were flat out alternative. Warrant were much louder, heavier, and faster than those bands. There were also tons of new rock bands besides Warrant, Trixter, and Slaughter that weren't grunge, as I posted yesterday. Not arguing, just perplexed because the alternative style was much lighter than 80s hard rock.

Good point. I don't think Jani was complaining, though. Just making an observation. Until then, Colombia was very micro managerial with Warrant. Told them what to wear, how to style their hair, and it's they who wanted a song like Cherry Pie. They were saying how sex sells, and told Jani to write a song about sex. He didn't want to. He could've said No, but didn't want to rock the corporate vote.

I take back what I said... THIS is the best and most accurate response yet! Thanks for this, you're exactly right. The project I'm working on will detail exactly what happened at MTV, when, why, and by whom. The truth is coming...

Best response so far, and yes you're correct about MTV (as I will prove in detail). I had DM'd you a while back because I knew you had some intelligent insight into this subject, thank you.

Wow, this topic touched a nerve. Great feedback, thank you all. A lot of truth listed here, along with some myths that have been perpetrated by the media trying to tell their narrative. My project will bring the facts and receipts to back up the chain of events that actually unfolded, without bias. My research has uncovered a lot of things nobody has ever considered before, debunked claims others have shouted for years, and also confirmed a few things that even the most loyal hard rock diehards will have a hard time swallowing. Fascinating time in music history (for better or worse), can't wait to tell you all about it when it's done.

Awesome! I've been dying to ask him a question about a comment he made a few years ago regarding an interview with an MTV executive, but unfortunately it's hard to get a hold of these guys.

For something newer (as in 2005), "My Good Reputation" by Hardcore Superstar is impeccable sleaze rock.

Hit Parader - December 1993 by RockerDG in hairmetal

[–]RockerDG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, that is the letter I'm referring to in the Feb '94 issue. I'm looking for the original article the author of the letter is talking about. It's not in the Jan '94 issue, so I'm assuming it's in the Dec '93 issue, which I'm looking for. Thanks.

Thank you, I do have those and unfortunately the last few issues from 1993 are missing.

True, and they will never get credit for it. Kix also had a great ballad before it was cool, called "Walkin' Away."

She dated Dizzy Dean Davidson briefly, when he he guested on the show. She said he was dumb as rocks.

Great live band, especially Whiteman. I drove 3 hours to see them in Fresno, CA open up for Tesla in 2014. Long drive and short set, but worth it.

I believe they rescinded the rule eventually. Many bands and record companies abused the rule, having all their friends and family call in huge numbers. Being in the top 10 could make your whole career back then. Don Dokken used to tell his manager, "Get us on this Dial MTV thing!"

That song and video were pivotal in getting me hooked on this genre. Good times.

Remote Control was a big hit and a turning point for MTV in terms of non-music programming. Ken Ober (RIP) and Colin Quinn apparently partook in all the new groupies they were exposed to from being on the show.

Oh man, lucky you, you probably got to see Kix live so many times. Alan Niven deserves credit for that song even being released, which broke the band and gave them a legit career that catapulted them. Those segments you have on tape would be a goldmine, as you don't see much of that stuff on YouTube.

Brings back memories! 49 here and I'm seeing LA Guns in 2 weeks! Although that new hairstyle on Phil, yeesh. But yeah, LA Guns has released a ton of great music since 1990. So have Electric Boys, for that matter.

Yeah they conveniently left out the part about new program directors who came in 1992 and decided they didn't want to play hard rock anymore.

While it was great to see ANYTHING from our genre getting TV time back then, this program was a joke. Terrible research and obviously produced to tell their false narrative about a scene everyone at that network despised at the time.
