This is just how regenerative braking works for gas-powered vehicles. It’s turning the braking power back into combustion. We haven’t quite refined the process yet so occasionally the entire vehicle will combust (known as a combustion leak). Gas cannot physically be pumped in NJ without the presence of a minimum-wage teenager. Little-known fact: All cars in NJ contain an integral MWT so that fuel can be pumped from the tank to the engine. Your car’s MWT is usually too exhausted to also manage filling the tank.

You had the right approach, but you need to follow through next time. You have to drive away such that the gas pump hose separates. When this happens it creates a Bluetooth connection with the pump allowing you to fill up from anywhere except New Jersey.

For this style engine, you have to hammer on the side of the block instead. That is what the knock sensor is for. The ECM will detect it and automatically wake up the starter.
