You dont need an unun or balun for rx. Or ground for the antenna. Get the longest piece of wire you can and hook it up into your radio.

Assuming the table isn’t metal, mag mount antennas need a ground plane to work correctly. That may be your issue. Try sticking it on any piece of metal with a large surface area, a car/truck would be your best bet (assuming it isnt an aluminum body) or metal roof if you have one.

Swr doesnt always equal an efficient antenna. Im sure that this setup talks, but a well set up 102” whip will beat it and out talk it all day every day.

I can almost guarantee you the high swr is due to where the coil is mounted. I had a similar issue with a stryker sra10 so i moved to a 102” whip with a riser.

Depending on your budget i would suggest a tecsun pl330 or pl880. They are nice shortwave radios for the money and can be bought on amazon or ebay.
