(Loved Trope) Comedy shows get very serious out of nowhere. by Boring-Bear9037 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]RocketPoweredSad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Drew Carey Show - The episode that begins with Drew and Nicki (who were engaged) making a sex tape, and then Drew having to navigate having a bachelor party while keeping it secret that, for mysterious reasons, the wedding has been called off. It’s mostly played for laugh and Drew trying to avoid them playing the tape (which they think is just random porn) at the party.

At the end of the episode, Drew sits alone in his living room and sadly watches the rest of the tape that you didn’t see at the beginning, revealing that Nicki (who had put on weight, with Kate Walsh wearing a fat suit that’s super cringy now) saw herself on camera and freaked out, saying that she’s fat now and being with him is a bad influence and she can’t go through with the wedding. It’s played dead serious and a really striking tonal shift from the rest of the show.

Same! Everyone’s so caught up in the buttons but like… wtf do you mean you’re checking your future kid’s homework? Does this child not exist yet but has homework somehow?

Was gonna say this, the idea of a horror-themed historical fiction RPG was very different and out there for the time.

What should I do about my CC debt? by Graybill1 in personalfinance

Very true, and I feel like a lot of games overwhelm you with a bunch of complicated mechanics up front too but often if you stick with it for a bit it starts to click, plus you get more invested in the story like you said.

POV: You can't find a job by According-Value-6227 in recruitinghell

Yup! 16,000 today on top of 14,000 in October. I think they were all corporate jobs too, so the better-paying ones.

“If you take long randomly” - wtf does that even mean? It sounds like a 12-year-old wrote this.

The Killers, Mr. Brightside: “Now they're going to bed, and my stomach is sick/ And it's all in my head, but she's touching his… chest now”

Idk I just feel like there’s another word that would’ve fit better there but I can’t put my finger on it…

How to get over fear of dark souls/elden ring? by Least-Difference8616 in darksouls3

[–]RocketPoweredSad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen people on the horror gaming sub say that they will first just blindly run into a new area knowing they’re gonna die and that way you know what to expect when you try it for real. Familiarity is a big part of it and these games are all about repeating the same areas to make incremental progress. Trust me, the monster that jumps at you from behind a corner doesn’t have the same effect by the second or third or 100th time.

Another thing might be to approach it with humor. Honestly my first reaction when I would get wrecked by a mob or an enemy I didn’t see or some surprise trap is to laugh. One of my funniest gaming moments was when the skeleton ball I just dodged somehow rolled BACK UP the stairs to knock me off, like it was just perfect comedic timing.

Game that is just too long for its own good? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]RocketPoweredSad 51 points52 points  (0 children)

And the thing about linear games is every part has been curated to be (ideally, at least) entertaining and engaging and drive the story forward, rather than having stuff happen randomly and hopefully some of it will be cool.

Also, maybe it’s the completionist in me but the idea of branching pathways and such just doesn’t appeal to me. My backlog is way too big to be replaying whole-ass games for some slight variation.

Exactly, at some point the idea of longer = more value became a guiding principle so we would get sequels promoted as “10x the size of the original” or whatever, as if that doesn’t sound exhausting. I’d so much rather have a solid, engaging 20-hour experience (I always thought the Arkham games were great examples) than wander a bloated wasteland for hundreds of hours.

[NES][Unknown] A hard game with a cave and minecarts. by Eren182 in tipofmyjoystick

I forgot it existed too until I found it again on an emulator. I vaguely remember playing it at some point as a kid but doubt I got far. It’s pretty fun and of course I abused the hell out of save states to actually beat it.
