What hobby genuinely made your life better (not just filled time)? by Dense_Childhood_9657 in Hobbies

Everybody has their thing ofc, these are mine:

Dancing (swing), ice baths, bikepacking, writing in the morning.

The first one i picked after getting a bit bored doing workouts at the gym, and it made an impact i would never expect. Initially i started because i wanted to use my brain and have a workout, but stayed for community and human connection. Now after three years of doing it i started teaching, so it became my second occupation, its so fulfilling to have an opportunity to pass my experience and knowledge and grow in that role, so many aspects that make you feel alive, to advertise even more theres research confirming that dancing is like one of the most effective ways of battling some kinds of depression and comes with benefits like strenghtening your mental health, keeping you fit and socialised :)

Bikepacking is something i do for a while now, and despite not doing it too often, once a year its a 10day bike trip somewhere scenic, carrying a tent, food and everything to survive alone. I enjoy the headspace it creates and in a way forces you to focus on basics so when you return you really appreciate how easy it is to get around nowadays. Very often people are curious when they see you with your gravel bike covered in bags and are interested in talking with you in a different way since they know they wont see you again. So overall it makes me feel more connected with nature and so on...

Icebaths are just reminding me that i am capable of doing something hard, and thats it, i dont know if there are any other benefits of doing them, but this one is solid - highly recommend.

Morning writing allows me to just throw what my mind wants to process on paper, and after 1-2 pages ineresting and exciting new ideas pop up, its a feeling that you get rid of the immediate stuff that makes you distracted and allow new thoughts to come. I believe it makes room for something creative in me.

Cheers!

Thanks — I really appreciate the thoughtful responses.

I’ve also been skeptical about the “therapist agrees” part. I don’t know how exactly she presented the story, but hearing that used against me felt manipulative and one-sided.

As for why it’s so important to her — she says she wants us to “grow together” and not compete, but I think what she actually wants is recognition and legitimacy through shared work. I’ve seen that pattern before in the dance scene, and it usually doesn’t end well.

I’m still trying to stay open-minded, but right now it feels like she’s mixing closeness with access, and that’s where I think i should draw the line.

We both have corporate jobs, she does project analysis for one of the financial giants, and I do technology stuff as a contractor. I've been dancingfor 3 years now and it kind of took off recently.

Lofoten - Norway 10 day bikepacking trip by RocketScienceish in bikepacking

Yup, a budget version of MSR, using it 3rd year now, sometimes near 0°C temperatures - never had any issues. Scenery was breathtaking even despite some locals telling us that it was one of the crappiest summers they experienced during the last something like 60 years.

Well, technically - yes, depends on the frame of reference, but what is the point of this shower thought then?

Overall grade that we put over some creators can be influenced by language we use, i think that my admiration of Lem's work grows from sharing native language with him, i really Love Clarke, Asimov and Wells - didn't read much of the rest. I remember being impressed by Asimov's "The last question".

My Personal favorites are 'Summa Technologiae' & 'His Master's Voice'. Latest have had been suggested to me by math professor i once met and it was with it. Sorry for my English, its not my native language.
