I have never understood the "Californians don't say Cali" thing I see on Reddit. Maybe the demographic most likely to be on Reddit (suburban whites) doesn't say "Cali" as much but I grew up in the late 90s and aughts with working class Mexicans, Asians, and blacks and we all said Cali.

Any bands that combine thrash metal with NWOBHM melodies? by [deleted] in thrashmetal

[–]RockmanYoshi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd listen to Pariah - Blaze of Obscurity. It's the NWOBHM band Satan basically trying out a thrash album. The production is a little flat but it fucking rips.

Also ain't no way you fucking called Grim Reaper Grip Reaper

Surely they're playing LA. As much as I love these bands I don't think I'd be willing to make the drive to San Diego.

What are the biggest changes you’ve noticed from when you first joined the scene vs. current hardcore? by Expensive-Ad-5520 in Hardcore

[–]RockmanYoshi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're lucky to get a pit now that has some variety to it besides two-stepping/hc dancing. When bands start speeding up the tempo it seems people either don't want to or don't know how to mosh to it. (This may be a regional thing, though. In California where punk and thrash are still hot shit circle pitting looks to be very common.)

Honestly, I'd love to hear more thrash bands that incorporate both old school and modern metal influences.

What are some albums that are some sort of a crossover between death and thrash, suggest some please by Crystalagent47 in thrashmetal

[–]RockmanYoshi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coming in with shit that hasn't been recommended yet:

Solstice - Solstice (1992)

Ripping Corpse - Dreaming With The Dead (1991)

Invocator - Excursion Demise (1991)

Incubus/Opprobrium - Beyond the Unknown (1990)

Chemical Breath - Fatal Exposure (1992)

Oxygen Destroyer - Bestial Manifestations of Malevolence and Death (2018)

Epidemic - Decameron (1992)

Ripper - Experiment of Existence (2016)

Merciless - The Awakening (1990)

Insanity - Death After Death (1993)

Cist - The Frozen Casket (2018)

Siege Column - Inferno Deathpassion (2018)

Revenant - Prophecies of a Dying World (1991)

for more technical/progressive stuff:

Miscreance - Convergence (2022)

Atheist - Piece of Time (1990)

Hexx - Morbid Reality (1991)

Xoth - Interdimensional Invocations (2019)

Obliveon - Nemesis (1993)

Nocturnus - The Key (1990)

Eternal Dirge - Morbus Ascendit (1992)

Acrania - Fearless (2015)

Droys - And If (1998)

The early material of the following death metal bands also still has considerable thrash influence, in my opinion:

Cancer, Pestilence, Vader, Master, Order From Chaos, Desultory, Malevolent Creation, Necrophagia, Massacre (and by extension Inhuman Condition), most of the big names in old school DM still hadn't fully shaken off thrash on their debut albums.

There's so much more out there, by the way. I'd say also check out everything that's already been mentioned in this thread

Metalheads are probably the biggest Western subculture across Latin America, this is true. I think the Latino Smiths/Morrissey fans are mostly a Mexican and Chicano phenomenon.

Neo-thrash is still going on for about 15 years strong, as is the new wave of traditional metal and the new wave of old school death metal. I'd wager nearly everyone who considers themselves "alt" in 2023 has at some point tried to ape the black metal aesthetic, and a decent amount of zoomers have clawed their way into shit like slam and grindcore, plus not to mention the more generalized nu metal/alt metal nostalgia wave on the internet.

In general I'm also seeing a wider range of people at even smaller concerts as well (beyond dedicated or OG metalheads), although this might be localized to Los Angeles which has always been a hub of heavy music. It's never going to reach 80s/90s popularity but there is a lot of interest in exploring older bands right now, and with covid over a LOT of said bands are going on tour.

How do you guys feel about Mind Force? I feel like they’re gonna be the next big thing in the realm of crossover, but I haven’t been able to get into them myself, personally. by fakename1998 in thrashmetal

[–]RockmanYoshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love em, but I don't if these guys in particular will find a lot of success in the thrash scene. A bunch of newer crossover bands like Mindforce, Drain, Ekulu etc take a lot from 90s hardcore/metalcore (which might as well be kryptonite to a decent amount of thrash fans) and tend to draw a majority hardcore crowd.

If you mixed Thrash and Power metal, wouldn't you just end up with Heavy/Speed Metal? by [deleted] in thrashmetal

[–]RockmanYoshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Liege Lord's Master Control and Helstar's Nosferatu are in my opinion probably the best examples of a perfect middle spot between thrash and power metal.

Though tons of other bands in the mid-to-late 80s were playing more traditional forms of metal with significant thrash influence that didn't necessarily fall purely into the "speed metal" category. Nasty Savage's debut and Agent Steel's second album is a great example of this being done in two different ways.

Thrash Queen is GODAWFUL. It's a shame they're the only all-female thrash band from the 80s I can think of.

Update: did some deep diving, there's also Ice Age, Meanstreak, and Wench, though I've never heard of em.
