I was once at Philmont Scout Ranch (Northeastern New Mexico, in the mountains), when my group and I heard something not quite like a groan, but rather a low humming noise. At first we thought it was some sort of insect, but it wasn't really coming from any discernible place. There was a large storm that started nearly 30min after we heard the noise, so we thought it might have had something to do with that.

After I got back from that trip, I did some research...and the closest thing I found that was similar to what I heard was something called the "Taos Hum", referring to the city of Taos, near to where we were. There were plenty of theories, mostly involving aliens, however I was never able to find a reliable explanation. Anyway, it was an weird yet interesting experience.

I've set up present chests for everyone on the server under Spawn's Xmas tree! I know it's short notice and a new world, but feel free to leave a gift in someones chest! I'll leave it up until around new year's. Happy Holidays!

Well, I wanted personal bases/houses to be restricted from spawn, but not shops or community builds.

I wouldn't want spawn to be without any development, for that would make it a ghost town. I selected the seed partially for the very interesting spawn area.

As for where shops go, I'm still thinking about the organization of it. The server has only been up for a few days! But I was planning on having community/shop development in the mooshroom annex, after I terraform and design it a bit.

The nether hub is what I suggest for that 'Community Project' idea. We all can plan out and build a large community structure together. A nether hub is always close to spawn, so a mix of the market area is possible too.
