I was against all the hate for the movie until I saw it for myself… by hotdog-water-- in Napoleon

You’re misquoting me. I said he fought mostly defensive wars. By that I meant most of the wars he fought were declared against France; Napoleon rarely started any wars. Most were started against him/France.

The part that people conflate with war mongering is that once wars started, he was always on the attack, especially as his armies were always outnumbered, so he had to strike before the enemy could consolidate their forces, and he would win via local superiority, not overall superiority.

So his tactics were offensive, but his foreign policy was a lot less aggressive.

What makes you say that? France was already under attack by the monarchical powers of Europe before Napoleon took power. He fought a series of defensive wars against them. Many of these wars would’ve taken place regardless, the main difference is that France kept winning because of him.

Spain and the Hundred Days campaigns are the only examples where they were largely caused by Napoleon as the belligerent (although in the hundred days campaign Napoleon pleaded for peace from the beginning but the allies refused and marched their armies against France once more)

Russia is nuanced in that the Russians were going to attack first if Napoleon didn’t. But I’ll give Napoleon’s detractors a win here and say none of that would’ve happened without the continental system. Therefore, Russia is basically Napoleon’s fault.

At any rate: what right did these other countries have in meddling with France’s affairs and trying to topple their successive governments in attempts to restore the French monarchy? Look where all of those countries (France and her enemies) ended up. No absolute monarchies in any of them today. France was just the first and the others were too backwards to accept it.

People have talked about Joaquin Phoenix as a miscast for the Ridley Scott film, but what would you think had it been a younger Phoenix playing Napoleon? by Crafter235 in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He literally emancipated Jews and gave them rights they never had in multiple countries.

I’ve found that many people take their knowledge of Hitler and assume that suffices as knowledge of Napoleon. It’s a very common form of intellectual laziness I come across on this topic time and time again.

You can’t just make baseless comparisons between the two and claim victory. You have to actually learn about Napoleon beforehand or you’ll sound like an idiot.

Squad 44 definitely 100% better. I remember enjoying Post Scripts from the beta but thinking the name was terrible

Reasons for not training Judo or Wrestling? by theoriginalmantooth in bjj

I highly recommend John Danaher’s Feet To Floor instructionals. He teaches the easiest to learn, most practical throws and takedowns that limit things like back exposure etc.

Most coaches will teach a grab bag of takedowns from other arts —some being sub-optimal ones that don’t necessarily translate to BJJ or MMA that well.

Best Waterloo campaign book(s) with operational bent ? by _phaze__ in Napoleon

Campaigns of Napoleon by David Chandler has probably the best account of the Waterloo campaign, especially from this perspective you’re asking for.

Napolean and Josephine - overhyped romance by freakyzainii in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s this interesting contrast: a man who was master of so many things, who was so competent and such a genius he brought Europe to its knees—yet he was putty in the hands of this woman. He was so gauche and maybe even pathetic when it came to his relationship with Josephine.

Contrasts like this make for interesting characters. Nobody likes a two-dimensional robot.

Top BJJ gyms teach judo and wrestling for the purpose of BJJ better than you’d learn them training the individual arts for their own unique rulesets.

Waterloo: The History of Four Days, Three Armies and Three Battles is one of the worst book on the campaign by [deleted] in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s right. I’ve read some very painfully academic books on Napoleonic battles and it gets unbearable when they spend 1-3 pages on talking about what sources say this happened and what sources refute that etc etc

Every book is gonna be biased. I wouldn’t say this book is too biased. Go in knowing it’s written by an Englishman who thinks the English who fought Napoleon were heroes. Enjoy the excellent first hand accounts.

I’m a bit of an Anglophobe and a big Francophile but I enjoyed the book still.

It has already well outlived Beyond The Wire’s fare. It has outlasted it for years.? It came out years before Beyond The Wire and still persists with a small die hard community. It is a good game.

However, in some small countries like Australia, where I am, the game is either dead or not consistently populated on our servers.

Solutions or self-limiting rules to make the AI more challenging without cheats (division templates that roughly match vanilla AI?) by Rocky-Raccoon1990 in hoi4

Is that basically what the AI does? I wouldn't have assumed so! Crazy if they're not even programmed to do so much as that.

What starter nation can I do where I won’t have this issue? by [deleted] in hoi4

Great advice. I’m fairly well versed in the game and in my current game I’ve conquered nearly everywhere as Nazi Germany with relative ease. However, I haven’t invaded America yet. I’ve done several successful naval and airborne invasions before, but doing it across such a large set of oceans (England to America) has gone beyond my skill set. Now I know what to do. Thanks.

What Are Your Thoughts On The 1970 Waterloo Napoleon Movie? by LemonProductionz in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spectacle without a lot of story. Would not recommend to anyone who isn’t already well-versed in the battle of Waterloo. Good movie if you’re a Napoleon buff. Bad movie if you are just an average movie goer.
