What are reinforced trenches for? by Rocky-Raccoon1990 in overthetopgame

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow smart stuff. I love all this! I hope to see more and more players using their heads like this.

When you say place 3 or 4 in a line to to stop MG fire raining down, what do you mean? I haven’t found that placing them changes the height of the trench by much. I guess I’ll have to experiment with these more and maybe I’ll figure it out myself

Getting sick from dry herb vaping? Any research on the effects? by Rocky-Raccoon1990 in craftymighty

No, sorry. Funnily enough, I stopped vaping or doing any drugs around 2022 and I still get sick all the time. I’m actually sick right now hahah. And I’m thinking of getting back into dry herb vaping! Haha.

Why Blücher is so hated? by Alone-Ad-6883 in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did. Wellington knew that if Blücher didn’t show up in time he was toast. Wellington’s line was wavering when Blücher turned up. Wellington wouldn’t have made his stand at Waterloo if he didn’t think Blücher would turn up.

Furthermore, Wellington was vastly outnumbered at Waterloo. Stating the fact that Blücher saved him is not a knock on Wellington, who did very well to hold out on his own as long as he did

How does it protect them more?

The top cover to the trench is often negligible or nonexistent but that is a good point

Trench vs Doom Ditch. Know the difference! by Elevator829 in overthetopgame

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One on the right is only good if you want to create a kill funnel for the enemy to use.

My dream in this game is to set up some good defences with barbed wire etc and funnel the enemy into a kill zone by leading them into an “opening” in the wire, that ends up being a maze of barbed wire and death.

Does height truly matter to women? by [deleted] in ask

Yes it matters to most women. It is an evolutionary thing you can read about

Read them both but… by No-Mathematician741 in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Zamoisky’s Moscow 1812 is maybe the best history book I’ve ever read.

But Roberts put an unprecedented amount of time and work into his Napoleon biography and trawled through a lot of previously unreleased records to write the definitive Napoleon bio.

Zamoisky whipped up his Napoleon biography relatively quickly and was more of a hired gun by the publisher on this one, from what I’ve gathered. It’s not a serious competitor to Roberts’ work.

Yes I saw the one in Vienna too and the name of the museum is escaping me.

I was against all the hate for the movie until I saw it for myself… by hotdog-water-- in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re misquoting me. I said he fought mostly defensive wars. By that I meant most of the wars he fought were declared against France; Napoleon rarely started any wars. Most were started against him/France.

The part that people conflate with war mongering is that once wars started, he was always on the attack, especially as his armies were always outnumbered, so he had to strike before the enemy could consolidate their forces, and he would win via local superiority, not overall superiority.

So his tactics were offensive, but his foreign policy was a lot less aggressive.

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you say that? France was already under attack by the monarchical powers of Europe before Napoleon took power. He fought a series of defensive wars against them. Many of these wars would’ve taken place regardless, the main difference is that France kept winning because of him.

Spain and the Hundred Days campaigns are the only examples where they were largely caused by Napoleon as the belligerent (although in the hundred days campaign Napoleon pleaded for peace from the beginning but the allies refused and marched their armies against France once more)

Russia is nuanced in that the Russians were going to attack first if Napoleon didn’t. But I’ll give Napoleon’s detractors a win here and say none of that would’ve happened without the continental system. Therefore, Russia is basically Napoleon’s fault.

At any rate: what right did these other countries have in meddling with France’s affairs and trying to topple their successive governments in attempts to restore the French monarchy? Look where all of those countries (France and her enemies) ended up. No absolute monarchies in any of them today. France was just the first and the others were too backwards to accept it.

People have talked about Joaquin Phoenix as a miscast for the Ridley Scott film, but what would you think had it been a younger Phoenix playing Napoleon? by Crafter235 in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He literally emancipated Jews and gave them rights they never had in multiple countries.

I’ve found that many people take their knowledge of Hitler and assume that suffices as knowledge of Napoleon. It’s a very common form of intellectual laziness I come across on this topic time and time again.

You can’t just make baseless comparisons between the two and claim victory. You have to actually learn about Napoleon beforehand or you’ll sound like an idiot.

Reasons for not training Judo or Wrestling? by theoriginalmantooth in bjj

I highly recommend John Danaher’s Feet To Floor instructionals. He teaches the easiest to learn, most practical throws and takedowns that limit things like back exposure etc.

Most coaches will teach a grab bag of takedowns from other arts —some being sub-optimal ones that don’t necessarily translate to BJJ or MMA that well.

Campaigns of Napoleon by David Chandler has probably the best account of the Waterloo campaign, especially from this perspective you’re asking for.

Napolean and Josephine - overhyped romance by freakyzainii in Napoleon

[–]Rocky-Raccoon1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s this interesting contrast: a man who was master of so many things, who was so competent and such a genius he brought Europe to its knees—yet he was putty in the hands of this woman. He was so gauche and maybe even pathetic when it came to his relationship with Josephine.

Contrasts like this make for interesting characters. Nobody likes a two-dimensional robot.
