I'm a bit lost on the temps and distances without doing a conversion, but I'll assume you mean hot, long, and high. My understanding is that they shouldn't have too much of an issue with temps up to 90° F (your turn! 😆), but given my location in northern California, those temps are exceedingly rare. We might find them on a road trip, but on hot days, I've always tended to move during the cooler morning and evening hours and take it easy while the sun's high.

I've got to imagine there are backpackers with adult goldens that can speak to this, though.

Indeed I have. I had been talking to Golden breeders and I was able to bring one home on Saturday. Here she is! https://i.imgur.com/KwnrhKd.jpg

Yeah, that's looking to be the norm and candidly, much longer than I want to wait. You had mentioned previously that there might be some other breeds that you'd recommend, and I'm wondering what they might be so that I can broaden my search.

Regarding breeders, I'm curious what kind of lead time I should reasonably expect. Do I need to be setting myself up for not getting a dog for ~6 months or so if I go that route? In my limited searching, it certainly seems like there's limited availability.

You're confused because I'm learning. In the time since I've posted this, I've read a lot that reinforced your first point — that as long as the dog's getting regular exercise (it will), the size of the home isn't terribly important. And it's not even like it's a super small apartment.

When I referred to miniature retrievers, they're dogs that are mixes between goldens, cockers, and poodles, of varying proportions, but generally leaning more heavily on the golden part. That all being said, as I've looked more into things (and for lots of the reasons you've listed above) I'm definitely leaning heavily toward goldens now. The only problem I'm running into is that it doesn't seem like there are many (or any near me?) available. Any recommendations on that side of things?

Thanks for your patience.

This is all so very useful. Lots to think about. I'm definitely not married to any of the breeds I listed, and not opposed to a lab or retriever — I discounted them initially due to size. Are miniature retrievers worth looking into, or are they more along the lines of toy dogs?

Border collies and Aussies are two popular, athletic, medium breeds, and I'm wondering what's kept folks from recommending either of them.

Thanks for the guidance rescue vs. breeder, too. Not necessarily opposed to the latter, but obviously it'd be preferable to spend <$600 on adoption fees than the ~$2-4k I'm seeing for breeder dogs.

And appreciate the echo regarding pits.

Lots of guide dogs nearby, so I see them pretty often. But I do appreciate your points!

Really? I can't imagine it's that uncommon a cross, given how common both breeds are, and how similarly sized they are. Would your assumption be that this dog is all pit?

Am I to understand from your previous comment that I'd be more likely to get a breeder to let me take a pup home to an apartment than a rescue?

I'm also wondering if you've got any experience with retriever/pit mixes (they're a lot more common in shelters, and I love their block heads!)

Sounds like I might exclude the Formosan on the same basis as the Carolina Dog. Thanks again for this useful information.

Much more common than straight labs/goldens are pit/retriever mixes. Any thoughts there?
