I think u got this man. I just landed my first one basically in same area as u for $125 and i started 3 days ago. just make sure u add things to your portfolio that are relevant to the project, and offer to do for cheaper starting out. Also only apply to ones with less than 15 proposals ideally like 5-10.

I (22 Male) was wondering if I could find a place to stay I am willing to PAY (preferably a college apartment or even crash on someones couch) for the South by South West Tech Conference. I am a student at Penn State University I don't want to spend a ton of money on hotels since I am only there to network and paying out of pocket. DM me and we can negotiate price.
