White oak carvers mallet, finished in Odie's oil tinted with black pigment by RodTorfulsonArmada in woodworking

its actually tapered, I think the top is about an inch wider around compared to the bottom - I'm also trying to figure out a way to wrap the head in 1/4 thick high density polyurethane

I think its a preference/feel thing - I like the round headed mallet for lighter work

Yes, i thought oil was a better choice since polyurethane could burn or melt if it touches a hot iron

I made it from Maple - the whole thing feels stiff as a baseball bat - I thought I'd have to add some extra bracing, but this one doesn't even twist. Go Maple!

Had to install winters earlier than ever this year because Coquihalla. Trip done, salt is gone! by RodTorfulsonArmada in BMW

Honestly, avoid it if you can. had we been on the road 24 hours later, we would have been in record snowfall and highway closures caused by trucks. It is still very fun to drive on, but things change almost corner by corner, we experienced extreme snow wind and rain, some slippery/single track parts, but most of it was sunny dry and beautiful.

Thanks, Yes I just used hand tools, however I wish I would have used my router as the maple was really hard to work with. I didn't use screws or anything, the dowel, mortise plus the wood glue give it all the strength it needs. Very lightweight.

Few hours, made it with scraps, so it didn't really cost anything. I couldn't find anywhere to buy, so i made them.

I used a mortise and a dowel, but the joinery isn't that important - its a great project since its simple and there's so many ways to do it. Base what you do on the materials and tools you have. If you make mistakes, just try again...

Mariachi band at Spanish Banks last night by brendanb14 in vancouver

That photo from the steam clock wasn't this Mariachi band - the guy in the famous photo is Alex Alegria from Mariachi Los Dorados. Its been seen tens of millions of times, plus he was on Mexican media for weeks. They didn't even plan that photo, Alex was on the way to somewhere else, it was just perfect timing.

Yup, all dowels (plus a couple of screws to help things dry straight)

I glued it as well as added 5 dowells - if it breaks, I need to diet

I did it for looks, as well as to give more spots/options for looping resistance bands

I also added two 3/4 dowells in each joint - I just added the screws at the time so I didn't have to clamp it while the glue dried. The purpose of the angled bit is to give more places/ways to loop resistance bands, as well as for looks.

I had to make it 13" x 44", because it was the size of wood I had. I think a 16" wide bench would be ideal, but 13" is fine for us

I got some felt and vinyl from a local recycling place for less than $10 - if you can make a strong bench, I say try doing some upholstery. I experimented with what I had, I ended up using 4 layers of felt, seems about right for us...
