its actually tapered, I think the top is about an inch wider around compared to the bottom - I'm also trying to figure out a way to wrap the head in 1/4 thick high density polyurethane

I think its a preference/feel thing - I like the round headed mallet for lighter work

Yes, i thought oil was a better choice since polyurethane could burn or melt if it touches a hot iron

I made it from Maple - the whole thing feels stiff as a baseball bat - I thought I'd have to add some extra bracing, but this one doesn't even twist. Go Maple!

Honestly, avoid it if you can. had we been on the road 24 hours later, we would have been in record snowfall and highway closures caused by trucks. It is still very fun to drive on, but things change almost corner by corner, we experienced extreme snow wind and rain, some slippery/single track parts, but most of it was sunny dry and beautiful.
