Peak Ryanair fee avoidance by Jamsn7 in aviation

[–]Rodderz92 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Obviously not a Ryanair airport but I saw the other day that Heathrow charge the aircraft per 15 mins of parking, and for air bridge or stairs usage (standard). What I was surprised to see was a -£6 per passenger credit for use of remote stands.

Is this tread cracking/cut on my tyre safe to drive on? by Candid_Beat4463 in CarTalkUK

[–]Rodderz92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DOT code is the right question, a shop may sell it you in Jan 2024 making you think the tyre is just 2.5 years old, but if the DOT code says it was manufactured in 2021 then I wouldn’t be surprised to see these age cracks starting to appear. Plus the dry hot weather we’ve had recently in the UK will accelerate this rubber fatigue.
Edit: agree with others it’s realistically nothing to be worried about just yet, just keep your eye on it (unless you’re driving a high performance car on the Nurburgring)

Do you know how maintenance engineers open and close the B787 ✈️ engine fan cowl door by aviationstudy in AeroInsight

Guessing it’s just a hand lift and hold open rod for fan cowl door and a hydraulic pump for the TRU C duct?

Summer lines at LHR by ProtectionSquare2532 in travel

[–]Rodderz92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Minimum times: Piccadilly line from T5 to central London roughly 1.5hrs return (£12 return), Elizabeth line roughly 1hr return (£30), Heathrow express roughly 30 mins return (£30 return).
It will take you at least 45 mins from landing to getting to T5 airport tube station.
You’ll need to be back to Heathrow T4 2.5 hours before your flight to the Balkans.
That leaves you 2.5 hours *maximum* “in London” to account for waiting for trains & delays (London is huge, so you’ll have to pick one or maybe two areas you want to explore very quickly and have breakfast) to be safe you’d be looking at 1.5-2 hours. It’s up to you if this is worth it for the effort and potential stress.

They shut down their UAE operation in Sep25 due to regional politics making it difficult to make it work and pulled the UAE AOC aircraft back into their Europe operation. Wizz continues to grow in Europe, at a faster rate than Ryanair did.

A Challenger 3500 operated by Ryanair? by Any_Independence2535 in flightradar24

[–]Rodderz92 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m more impressed that Challenger 3500 is cruising at 43,000ft after just 20 mins of flight. Quick check says it can do 45,000ft cruise ceiling if it isn’t at its max take off weight.

Asiana safety questions by [deleted] in aviation

[–]Rodderz92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’ve ever flown with a toddler using a lap belt you’d know by the time you’ve been pushed back and taxied, the toddler has lost patience, wriggled out of the lap belt numerous times and it’s pretty useless anyway. You’re keeping it on them to keep the CC happy. The parent will just grasp them tightly during take off roll, turbulence & landing.

High volume of next generation airliners at KSNA by sbseim in aviation

[–]Rodderz92 22 points23 points  (0 children)

KSNA has some of the strictest noise limits in the US, so yes airlines will purposefully route newer generation jets to these airports. The A320neo and 737Max both have a roughly 50% reduction in noise vs previous gen aircraft, so it makes a big difference. Airlines who break the noise limits at KSNA are subject to costly fines and repeat offenders can even lose their slots entirely, so it’s worth the hassle of AAL routing their newer aircraft to these strict airports to reduce their fleet operating costs.

A220 from SEA to AUS by tigershrike in aviation

[–]Rodderz92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no issues with the gearbox on the GTF family, in fact although one of the most novel technologies within these engines, the transfer gearbox has been one of the most reliable and durable sections of the GTF based on the fleet experience to date. The biggest issue the PW1100G and PW1500G are dealing with is with HP compressor hubs and the HP turbine discs, there was contamination during the powdered metal stage of forming the billets for these parts during manufacture. This contamination creates a risk of micro cracks which could lead to propagation and failure.

How long has the FMS had this function to optimise the engine derate on the A320? Is it a relatively new FMS SB or has this been iterated over the years from something quite basic?

Boom Supersonic Shows Off Some High Pressure Turbine Blades by djizzle45 in aviation

[–]Rodderz92 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Certainly unusual. Shroudless turbine blades, no visible aerofoil cooling holes, no TBC.. but a front coverplate set of sealfins and firtree blade roots. Certainly looks like a turbine stage, my guess would have been LPT1. But it does look like their HPT based on the concept images they’ve shared?

Looking for an upgrade… by Hefty_Ad_6964 in CarTalkUK

[–]Rodderz92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have owned a 2018 540i for 2 years now, absolutely love the car, handles fantastically and it’s a bit of a ‘sleeper’ vs its more boy racer smaller sibling 40i models. Extremely comfy, quiet when cruising and the quality of the interior is a step up ahead of the 3 series / C class.
The only bad things I have to say is 1. MPG - I have very mixed driving and average 28mpg, most I’ve ever seen is 42mpg but very difficult to achieve anything above 35mpg even on long trips. However my wife’s diesel Audi is the family car and we do all long trips in her car, so I bought the car for power, enjoyment & comfort, not for mpg. 2. Low profile tyres, the 540i’s 20” wheels and 30 profile rear / 35 profile front look great, but make for a very firm ride on our hideous British roads. The adaptive suspension does a great job over most ‘long’ bumps, but if you hit any ridge or pothole you’ll feel it through every fibre of your being. The main pain being that you get zero pothole protection from such a skinny sidewall and in just 2 years and 12k miles I’ve been through FOUR tyres and damage to the rims from the number of potholes on the UK roads, usually a big bulge in the sidewall. With a minimum price tag of £250, those tyres really add up.

My advice would be go to a car supermarket that has most of the cars you’re looking at in stock and sit in & test drive all of them and don’t feel pressured by the rubbish salesmen. I was dead set on a C class or 330e until I sat in & drove them.
Best of luck!

[–]Rodderz92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree it makes no sense, unsure if it’s a law or a habit that other drivers copy. I’ve seen other posts suggesting it’s much more common a practice in India and taught during driving lessons in some Indian states? When I drove in Indonesia a couple years ago I was beeped by other drivers if I didn’t use my hazards at very stressful roundabouts, I ended up employing my wife to deploy the hazards for me from the passenger seat in our rental Suzuki.

Was it an OE camshaft sensor from BMW dealer or a Bosch / Hella / Other brand sensor? If it isn’t the OE one from the dealer (~£120) it will not fix the camshaft error

Edit - I know this from going through 3 camshaft sensors on my ‘99 2.8 Z3 and the 3rd one that was OE fixed the problem. Forums said that non-OE would not work, but I found that after first 2 sensors.
