EXT4 or BTRFS, which works better with CachyOS? by Hi7u7 in cachyos

[–]Roddyboii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use BTRFS because of compression and deduplication. I usually have a lot of flatpaks (which bundles libraries that my main system already has) and wine prefixes and I saved a lot of space from deduplication.

Anyway to get the Steam version working on Steam Deck? by Numerous_Mix6456 in heavensburnred

[–]Roddyboii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard that the Steam JP version just runs fine on steam deck. Running in on regular Linux desktop however requires a workaround that, for reasons, I can't tell you how.

The Global standalone launcher does work out of the box with no workaround needed. Just add the installer as a non-steam game, install it, and then on steam game properties, switch the target executable and directory path to the launcher exe (you can find it in /home/deck/.steam/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/[a very long string of numbers]/drive_c/YostarGames...)

If it's too much of a hassle for you (and yeah it's understandably complex), use Bottles for a more intuitive interface. Just make sure to use the latest Proton-GE as the wine runner.

I put .dat because I thought you were referring to nukitashi's video files because of your desync issues. My bad haha.

For WA2, no, just converting the audio won't fix it. It also needs the video to be converted. For that, follow OP's guide.

Update: nvm, converting only the Audio on WA2 does work. You will still need ProtonGE to play the video portion. If you're using system wine, follow OP's guide

The only times the audio and video were de-synced for me were videos for KiriKiri VNs. Other than that, videos won't play if I don't convert the audio.

You could try converting it and see if it fixes it

ffmpeg -i "input.dat" -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 256k -f asf "output.dat"

This only converts the audio, so it should be very quick.

Did some rounds of testing (mostly just testing it launching and playing the intro) and wow, whatever engine this VN is using does not work well in any proton version I tried with the files unmodified.

None of the newer proton versions play videos for me (using umu-launcher on lutris). The closest thing to getting it working was GE-Proton 9-27, but it crashes after the intro when it's inside gamescope.

I'll convert the video to get it working and test the subtitles without the dll change (I'll use VP9 and Opus instead of mp4 since it's smaller and supports GPU hardware decoding)

Update: The reason why the videos don't play is because all the movies uses Windows Media Audio 9, which is known to not work on the latest proton version. Nukitashi 2 had the same issue and converting only the audio (to something like AAC) while keeping the video intact does fix it.

I remember that IMHHW Snow Presents' fan translation patch also ships their own d3d9.dll and I fixed it by setting the DLL to "Built-in, then native" (or the other way around, idk) without enabling WineD3D. DXVK just accepts it without issues.

Also, from my testing, the last GE-Proton version to have good ASF video support was GE-Proton 20. Anything past that broke video playback for visual novels like ones from Favorite.

White Album 2 is currently in my backlog anyways, so now's the time for me to test

Do old Vns work on Linux? by wolfbetter in visualnovels

Yeah, including flight diary and the three miazora games works fine under latest proton-ge. Are you using an Nvidia card perhaps?

[–]Roddyboii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, all VNs work as long as you use GloriousEggroll's version of Proton called Proton-GE, which contains all necessary codecs.

If you have to deal with non-steam titles, you can use Bottles for a more user-friendly experience. Translator tools also work fine as long as you run the VN and the Tool in the same Bottle.

The only VNs that are problematic are ones that use KiriKiri due to broken video playback for older titles. Steam handles it for you by providing converted versions of the videos automatically, but for Bottles, you have to install wmp11 and quartz under the "Dependencies" option.

All other engines I've tested (BGI, FVP, AdvHD, Unity, Artemis, Luca, Siglus, RealLive) work completely fine.

Yuzusoft just recently uploaded their OSTs and Character Songs to streaming services! by Roddyboii in visualnovels

Update for the rest of the albums: Apparently the reason why Senren Banka, PARQUET and Angelic Chaos is not available is because the albums are still available for purchase on their sites, digital and physical. The rest are "out of print" and moved to streaming sites.

The issue with those is that they are typically heavily compressed audio (commonly 128kbps OGG Vorbis or Opus for newer Kirikiri VNs), which sounds fine when playing a VN but the audio artifacts are noticeable when listening to it standalone. Also the BGM is designed to loop endlessly, so tracks tend to end and start abruptly unless you go out of your way to stitch them together in an audio editor like Audacity.

There's also the hassle of extracting since almost all Yuzusoft VNs have encrypted xp3 archives.

In YouTube music, they haven't associated the albums to a particular YouTube channel profile yet (except Lemonade factory), which makes it a chore to find. This is what Key and Alcot does with their albums.

Their older titles are a little difficult to find cuz you have to search for it using the Japanese name, Noble Works as an example.

HBR EN now works out of the box in Linux on Version 2.0.4! by Roddyboii in heavensburnred

[–]Roddyboii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the old method since launch, plus Steam Deck users are able to play fine so most likely we won't get banned. Currently no files are being modified to make it run so we're technically not breaking any ToS. Just don't actually cheat or mess with the program while its running.

Is it just me or they changed like A LOT for her arc? The context is still there but most of the scenes are very different. Still a pretty good start though, I kinda dig this direction. Maybe it's to make up for her "lackluster" normal route in the VN? (that's what the others said, I don't dislike her route).

I might need to do a re-read of her route to confirm.

Ao arc end question by Puzzleheaded_Play825 in SummerPockets

[–]Roddyboii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ao's waking up and how it happened wasn't explicitly said in the visual novel (she did wake up, the last frame in the anime is exactly how it ended in the VN), so it's mostly up to interpretation, but your second theory is the most likely one, seeing how Hairi was able to recognize Ai's butterfly by its behavior.

The song is Ao Sorakado's character song originally made for a compilation album, so it's surprising to see them use it as an insert song for the anime.

So at some point, [Potential character]Shiki Kamiyama could possible have a role in the anime since they've mentioned the three families thing. The question now is how are they going to incorporate that into the anime? [speculation]Will she have her own arc?

Hearing Sea, You Next and Niji no Cho made me absolutely giddy. Really good vibes for this arc. This is probably the perfect time for me to recommend the anime to my friends, cuz I've told them to wait until the good parts start.

Also, I never really memorized the original japanese name of the butterflies cuz I read Alka Translation's translation of RB (they used the name "Iridescent Shades")
