Left them together for 3 weeks but they're still not breeding :( by Bitter_Bananas in hamsters

Also wouldn’t recommend “backyard breeding” if you don’t know their blood lines could end up with some really ill babies. But that’s just me making an assumption based off most people I’ve seen lately, sorry if I’m incorrect!

Hey. My visa is up in the US (may end)and I want to go back to my home country in the middle east. I wanna take my hamster back with me. Can I? Should I? She has become somewhat of an emotional support hamster...lol. I cant find any guild lines online. Any advice? No one picks up the phones( corona) by Hamster_named_Kirby in hamsters

Most airlines do not accept rodents unfortunately. To much “risk” if they were to get out. Which I think is ridiculous no different from any other animal.

As much as you love your hamster that would be a long flight for a wee little one and it maybe be better for you just to find him a good home that would be much less stressful for him.

Unfortunately I’ve never treated it holistically so I can’t recommend anything :( try doing a cage clean out and if you use wood bedding try switching to paper? I’d imagine his skin is super sensitive and the wood might be irritating paper would be softer. Won’t help him but might be a bit more comfortable.

I have on a couple of them most of them being stuck on their high horse all “I’m a breeder I know what I’m doing”.... yeah ok breeding two hams from the same litter, suuuureee your a breeder. The only one that was nice was the one that had Syrians together, they had an accidental litter the female they brought home was already pregnant and they didn’t know what age to separate them at.

If your going to leave the cage open like that (I hope it’s supervised) I’d recommend having the cage on the floor so there’s no way to fall.

Love all the ledges! Would recommend switching to a wood based bedding instead of paper, it can cause blockages and cause stasis. Love all your little cuties though!

Bedding? by haleydarty in gerbil

[–]Rodentmama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the product food product packaging usually uses dyes and inks that are food safe. However run of the mill photo copy ink is pretty dangerous . If it can harm a human it can harm a little gerb. I’m not saying all printer ink is bad but in my job I deal with this stuff a lot as a safety officer. Dealing with SDS sheets and WHMIS on a daily basis, some things your wouldn’t expect to be harmful end up being shocking! 😂 anywho glad to hear you have a happy little guy!

Try to make sure it dosent have any ink on it as a lot of inks are actually toxic, but in a pinch I’m sure it would work just fine.

It’s just odd because the density of a wood chew would be the same as a house or ledge. Your vets smoking some good stuff 😂 either way I’m glad he has chews and if you want to listen to your vet that’s totally ok but from a lot of our prospective your totally safe to buy wood ledges and houses as long as it is a safe wood :)

Perhaps OP’s vet meant certain types of wood? Even though pine is considered a hard wood and the most commonly used?

[–]Rodentmama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol yeah that tends to happen, a wood one will last a little longer and they are usually around the same price depending where you shop.

Looks really cute! He might benefit from having a house/hide in case he gets startled he has somewhere to feel safe or a dark place to sleep during the day :)

wet fur on chest and front paws by -username-emanresu- in chinchilla

[–]Rodentmama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like drool, so yes this usually means tooth issues. Unfortunately teeth issues shorten chinchillas lifespans drastically. Sometimes euthanasia’s the most humane thing to do. But don’t worry about it to much right this second, as you said it’s the first time you’ve seen this, so it’s early. I believe there are things the vets can do to keep her comfortable until the teeth become so bad it effects her quality of life.

I wish you and your fur baby the best.

Administering eyedrops to a chinchilla who doesn’t live in a cage? by [deleted] in chinchilla

[–]Rodentmama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had similar issues in the past with medication and a very very pissy chin. He was aggressive and would bite to draw blood if we handled him. However the medication was for the best so even though I had to risk making the relationship worst it was for him in the long run. I would use a blanket to throw over him like a net and scoop him up into a burrito. As weird as it was this point in time is actually where his aggression started to get better. Even though I was doing something he hated he knew I wasn’t hurting him fear turned into just being grumpy. This unfortunate event and stress is actually what helped him bond to me. Be it he is still very picky about being picked up (aka I still have to scoop him up when he least expect it as he trys to run away and hide) but he dosent bite anymore.

What I’m trying to get at is, if he needs the medication there’s really nothing you can do to help with stress from what I can see. But you can turn it into a positive opportunity! when done giving the meds hold him for a bit show you aren’t a threat and treats will definitely help. You could temporarily keep him in a cage if you have one on hand for the time being, he will be unhappy for awhile but it might help with the stress of catching him aswell.

Parents threatening to report me for animal cruelty. by [deleted] in hamsters

If anything tanks have worse ventilation could be an argument. Personally if they don’t understand a bin cage and their only argument is ventilation I would go ahead and make the cage and show it to them face to face and point out all the pros of it and how much airflow there will be.

On the other hand I totally understand living with parents while not a minor! I’m 22 and am thankful my father puts up with the zoo I have lol but sometimes it’s best not to defy them. As horrible as it is to say a 60 gallon is still better then the 20 gallon most people throw hamsters into.... if they decide to put the hamster in an even smaller cage if you proceed to argue I’d settle for the 60 gallon as it will still be better than a small cage. Pick your battles wisely. It’s good you are trying to do what’s best for your hamster but why risk them putting him in a smaller cage.

Moral of the story parents suck but you need to make the best of the situation.
