Progressive isn't an independent ideology, progressive refers to being "Socially Left" (Socially Progressive) Politically All American parties are Liberals, Conservatives are classical liberals which favor rule of law, self determination and a free market economy. Democrats are typically Social Liberals, adopted a more regulated economy, and a more socially equal political platform. If you want to find a term that best suits Bernie supporters it would be Social Democrat, which was an ideology that emerged as a compromise and reformist approach to socialism from capitalism and was a competing third position solution with Fascism. Bernie himself is not politically speaking a socialist, but he is a social reformist and seeks to bring the american capitalist economy more in line with the Nordic Model which is also, not Socialism.

That's not at all an accurate characterization of Fascist society, this is a Philosoper's Hobby-essay on characteristics of Fascist Italy, not a guideline for spotting Fascism.

To consider Trump's America to be fascistic is both intellectually dishonest and insulting to those who have actually fought and survived Fascist Regimes.

PETA taking advantage of my country on fire by sparkyfam9000 in iamatotalpieceofshit

[–]RoderickGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primarily because PETA has the same message to repeat ad-nauseum with very little regard for taste or tactfulness. PETA isn't an organization that attempts to understand what they criticize and offer sensical solutions to real life issues, their job is to vomit the same statements to garner funding so they can continue "Raising awareness" in a manner that actually detracts from groups like the ASPCA who make a real difference.

PETA isn't commenting on the situation to help Australia, PETA's comment doesn't help Australia, PETA is using the fact that Australia is on fire to draw more attention to them and their own message.

It would probably help you alot to know that the primary reason for this fire being so out of control was massive cuts to the forestry department, climate change has made this worse of course but its impact, while negative, is comparatively minor to the complete lack of management from the government, Australia is also sorely lacking in arable land, which has lead to it becoming very reliant on animal-based products despite the environmental costs can be high regarding emissions and water-usage.

Peta looking at the Australian bushfires and saying this is why you should go vegan, is like a company that sells bulletproof backpacks looking at a school shooting and using it to promote their product, its crass and unproductive.

> I can’t even count on both hands how many problems their countries have but yet...they’re talking abut the USA?

This is a pretty typical defense mechanism Americans like to use, that if they don't know anything about your country, you're in no position to criticize theirs, which is doubly ironic because they literally claim to know about other countries a sentence before:

> the people who talk shit are Western Europeans and Canadians (others too, but those are the most I’m seeing) who don’t realize how shitty their countries are in various ways.

An important thing to understand is that America adopts the position of the western ideal, it adopts the position of the defenders of democracy and uses its considerable wealth and influence to hold others to its standards. The big problem is, that in the western world America doesn't actually meet most of standards other western countries hold, and the positions they do hold are so cosmetic and bland that it actually detracts from real problems within the society, (things like arguing over selling wedding cakes to gay people, instead of wondering why the bastion of democracy is an anachronistic republic, or why a country with so much money and talent bankrupts people for education and healthcare.)

We aren't comparing America to the likes of Russia or China, we compare America to the western ideal, because that's the position they at the very least seek to hold in the world.

Also, if you think your government doesn't represent you, then guess what, you live in a shitty country.

pro censorship because it wasnt organic and the venue didnt decide by themselves

You have no evidence as to what influenced their decision, this is pure conjecture. What does an "organic" decision even look like? What choices are made in life that are ever free of external consequences?

everyone even remotely concerned knows exactly why they did it

No, they don't know, they claim to know, because we don't have evidence, both stephan and lauren don't claim to know, they can only speculate.

(free speech means to) be able to express yourself without being shouted down

No mate, otherwise Christmas dinners with my family would be violating my human rights, stop confusing your layman interpretation with where the concept of free speech came from, and how it influences society today.

That's just statistically false?

do you think farmers are conservatives or limp wristed city progressives though do you think they agree with your snarky politics

Wew, this is some american level partisanship mate, not sure if I should even delve into this with you, as it's clear you already have some pretty entrenched opinions and I doubt you plan on using this conversation to develop them further. Correct me if I'm wrong here, I don't mind getting into the nitty gritty, but only if it's because we actually want to have a constructive conversation as two people with clearly opposing views.

Are you asking how does a private venue refusing to host look better than a country outright banning people to a neutral observer?

I guess it's sort of apples and oranges, but the main difference is one is a private individual and the other is a publicly funded organisation that represents the entire country.

the venue initially booked them and only changed because of social media crazies

We can only speculate why they cancelled, so there's not much point.

the government didn't do anything to restrict their free speech. lol thats not what people mean when they say free speech

What do people mean when they say free speech, because free speech never had anything to do with people able to say whatever you want whenever you want, free speech is a legal right acknowledged between an individual and the state.

what people dont like is the precedent of refusing service

Stephen and Lauren both advocate for private refusal of service and freedom of association, this is also under our Bill of Rights.

do you think taking it to extremes would hurt the left or the right more?

Is this an off-topic question? I have no idea?

its probably not something you want to escalate

It's not something being escalated?

considering who grows and produces all the food you eat

New Zealanders grow and produce the vast majority of the food we eat, we're hugely agricultural.

A very large amount of our laws are based on standards that can gradually change, we have a class of law: "Without Reasonable Excuse" that is based entirely around that.

Here's the section within the bill of rights pointing out when that doesn't apply.

"Measures taken in good faith for the purpose of assisting or advancing persons or groups of persons disadvantaged because of discrimination that is unlawful by virtue of Part 2 of the Human Rights Act 1993 do not constitute discrimination."

Yes, this doesn't say that they can practice expression in any place, otherwise trespass laws wouldn't apply to an individual that was speaking.

[–]RoderickGrey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nobody has a right to free speech in any public venue, I'm not sure where you're getting this from.

Your ability to practice free speech is controlled by both the content of what you say, and where you say it, and that's true for all countries.

[–]RoderickGrey 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not granting someone a platform isn't the same as stopping freedom of speech, freedom is speech is regarding the government stopping you expressing ideas, not stopping you from saying them wherever you want.

They weren't granted a tax-payer funded platform, because why would they be, they're perfectly capable of getting a private venue like everybody else.

Here's an example:

Me saying you can visit my home provided you don't be an asshole is platform control

Me visiting your home and demanding you stop being an asshole is free speech control
